I need a rant about the Guardian's style section

I'm being very 2011 and entertaining myself in the garden with the online newspapers.

Sali Hughes is talking about make-up in an online video. The woman has an ORANGE face. Seriously, WTF? How can you possibly teach other women about make-up when you can't even match foundation to your own skintone?

As for Jess Cartner Morley, words fail me. She has the vocabulary of a particularly vacuous fourteen year old, and has bloody awful clothes, hair and taste. Stop getting dressed in the dark and try investing in a mirror, Jess.

AIBU or are they both just shocking? Also, given neither seems to have any talent for telly, why doesn't the Guardian tell them to stick to writing? Hannah Betts, Lisa Armstrong and Justine Picardie seem to manage well enough with words, after all.

What's wrong with you people? John Major would get it before Giles bloody Coren.

resurrecting this thread to thank thomas and jack (hmm... boys names both of you... [chmm]) for sharing.

I would NEVER admit to thinking he's a bit sexy. No way. Uh uh. Not me[cblush]

Just wanted to say that I loathe both Giles Coren (sloppy eater - eeeuw) and Jess Cartner Morley (reminds me of Anthea Turner).

I was told that these blogs are the electronic version of the nasty little girls who stood in the corner of playground and were vicious and bitchy about the popular and successful children. They certainly are. Very few of the comments are reasoned, and none of the authors would be prepared to say them to their victims face. I really enjoyed the irony of thomasbodley accusing Jess Cartner-Morley of talking like a vacuous 14 year old - while using the phrase "seriously, WTF". Beyonf hilarious. Jess strikes me as an intelligent journalist who succeeds in explaining fashion and current trends to those who are not in the business. She is restrained and perceptive in a business which encourages gushing nonsense - and worse, reading the unpleasant drivel on these pages, mostly posted by bored, self-loathing people.

FuckOffMrBloom · 22/04/2013 10:23

Awwww jess, did you Google yourself, dear?

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/04/2013 10:28

Very old thread.

^^ ??

I love those Jess Cartner-Morley videos, and agree with Youareallnumpties. I don't think the things she wears in the videos are her real clothes, she's just interpreting a fashion trend. I think she does it quite well. It's a dispatch from high fashion-land, and I quite often get ideas from it in the same way I might from Vogue if I read that. I find her funny rather than irritating -- and she has a nicely judged sense of the essential silliness of fashion while still being very interested in and knowledgeable about it. Finally, I think she is brave to stand and be videoed each week, often in clothes that don't really suit her. That bespeaks a refreshing lack of vanity.

Sali Hughes, on the other hand, I think is over-made up -- but she's giving dispatches from the world of serious beauty obsession. I'm less interested in that world so I hardly ever read/watch her.

ExRatty · 22/04/2013 10:38

Another positive vote for Sali Hughes. I think her makeup column is excellent

EmpressMaud · 22/04/2013 11:00

I don't care very much for Sali Hughes' own makeup, but most of her recommendations for my skin type/colouring have worked. I don't agree with her about false eyelashes, however, I think they rarely look well.

I didn't like the Guardian fashion section last time I checked.

amessagetoyouYoni · 22/04/2013 13:02

I abhor Jess whatserface. She writes like a J17 'journalist'. So jarring. And the clothes are without fail a) stupid prices b) just plain STUPID or c) BOTH.

amessagetoyouYoni · 22/04/2013 13:06

I saw her in the hairdressers in Stokie a couple of years ago. She was pretty and dressed like a normal human being. She wasnt wearing any of the ghastly 'on trend' shite she peddles on that sick-inducing page of hers.

I had to sit on my hands and bite my lip not to say something to her, actually. You may say I bottled it Grin ...I say I was just trying to leave her be while she was getting her roots done.
