Okay now I know this is going to be a shock to the system but I have no make up. I have not used it for 2yrs so what to buy now and re stock as I`m bloody bored of scarying myself in the mirror !

So please suggest your must have product and then I will have a superior mumsnet list clutched in my little mitt to go shopping.

Couple of earmarked items already on list cargo lash serum and faux cil mascara YSL.

A really good powder. One of those that can be done wet or dry, so for more or less coverage.

A nude plumping lip gloss.

Eye shadow primer that you can put on with a finger - MAC does a great one, it's a shimmery nude so you can put it on and look "done" without much trouble.

Do lash serums really work? I've been thinking about buying Lashipix but it's a bit costly - does it really make your lashes grow thicker/longer?

Whatevs · 22/04/2011 16:46

What skin colour/type are you?

A good foundation or tinted moisturiser. What is your complexion like? If it is dry, I can recommend Chanel Vitalumiere if you can splash the cash, or Boots Lift & Luminate (very, very similar to Chanel, honestly) if you want to spend less.

I find a cream blusher better than powder. I am naturally pale, so just use a touch in the mornings to give me a 'glow'. Nars do nice ones. Benefit do a nice one, too.

I love cream eye shadows as much less faffy and more forgiving on eye creases. Mac do a great range.

I second nude lip gloss. I like Clinique Super Balm.

Mascara is the holy grail. Currently using Loreal Telescopic, but may be time for a change soon...

lilolilmanchester · 22/04/2011 16:51

MAC cream blushers are fantastic.

Fayrazzled · 22/04/2011 17:02

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser or Chanel Vitalumiere powder foundation (really easy to alter coverage using either the brush or sponge which are included)

Nars The Multiple in orgasm- creamy stick which can be used on cheeks, eyes, lips: fab multi use product

Laura Mercier Eye Basics liquid eyeshadow in a neutral shade (v easy to use)

Guerlain Le 2 Mascara- includes 2 brushes- best mascara out there IMO

Christian Dior Lip Glow- looks scarily pink in the tube but is a great lip balm that enhances your lip's own natural colour.

Good luck and enjoy!

I was only going for Cargo to spend my boots points. I heard mixed reviews on Talika and heard good on Idol Lash.

My skin type is combination oily t panel dry cheeks prone to dehydrated skin.

Definetely like the sound of the nude lip balm and cream blush.

Powder wet/dry what make would that be.

So eye primer

foundation or powder ??

cream blush

nude lip gloss

mascara either l`oreal or old faithful YSL

Eye lashes curler ??

Eye Shadow ?

Skin primer ?

Concealer ?

Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer + primer
MAC concealer
MAC eyeshadow and eyeliner
eyelash curler
Maybelline mascara (the pink/green one)
Nude lip gloss

jumpinghoops · 22/04/2011 20:43

Eyelash curler - go for Shu Uemura eyelash without a doubt. The best.

jumpinghoops · 22/04/2011 20:46

Also- would second Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and primer- particularly with combination skin. Is fabulous (even without the primer should you decide not to get one).

moondog · 22/04/2011 21:18

I'd go to a make up counter and get done over.
Look for one you like the look of by checking out how the women who run it look.
I had a fab experience at Bobbi Brown which really changed everything for me.

herethereandeverywhere · 22/04/2011 21:26

Clarins beauty flash balm

YSL touche eclat

chipstick10 · 22/04/2011 21:29

Mac face and body foundation or
mac tinted moisturizer
Laura mercier primer
Laura Mercier loose powder
Bobbi Brown concelor or clinique concelor pen
Stila eyeshadows and lipsticks and glosses brilliant pigments last all day
same for the blushers
Mac beach bronzer creme
bobbi brown eyeliner gel
Maybelline mascara in brown its more flattering.

Schmaffy · 23/04/2011 14:34

I've got a very similar skin type.
I'd go for some:
Bare Escentuals mineral foundation + powder (mineral veil)
Bobbi Brown Gel eyeliner in a brown ( comes in a pot - paint it on, lasts all day)
Mac 'Well dressed' blush
A high end mascara - just bought Maybelline Great Lash which I used to love -but after a few years of using Chanel/Lancome it's just not the same Sad

Enjoy!

brookeslay · 23/04/2011 16:09

Ooohh I will have to buy a new beautiful make up bag to put some of these goodies in.

I thought I would go to Stratford Upon Avon as it has the nearest Space nk.

Then fill the gaps in John Lewis Solihull I know they have Bobbi Brown so I`m

try and get an appointment after the schools go back.

I found 3 Mac stockists but they are all Birmingham might have to go and suffer the crowds. At least they I could get most of the items at Selfridges in one hit ??

I `m really looking forward to my splurge thank you for the great suggestions !

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, bare escentuals mineral foundation, MAC eyeliners, absolutely 100% you have to have the NARS multiple stick in orgasm. Lipstick queen in medieval for more sheer summer lipstuff - looks v red but I just slick it on like a lip balm and rub it in a bit and it looks more natural. Good luck!

Meggles76 · 23/04/2011 18:35

Yes, definitelt make some appointments to see what brands work for you.
I dont wear a lot of make up but have the following that I like:

Clinique primer - make up primers are good as they help make up go one the skin well and help make up stay put
Clinique super double face powder in matte beige - I don't like the feel of a heavy foundation so this is good for me.
Maybelline mascara - brown for day time and black for going out
Bourjois eye shadow pots - in brown, beige, gold
Bourjois blusher pots - a peach one and a pink one
Clinique lip stick in a pinky brown colour
Clinique full potential lips in a nude colour - it is a lip gloss sort of thing
Clinique lip balm gloss in grapefruit

iloveeverton · 23/04/2011 19:14

I like

Clarins curve mascara
MAC foundation
Loreal eyeshadow- trio one
Body shop bronze powder

MagicSeeker · 23/04/2011 22:34

Have a look at the videos on www.lisaeldridge.com for inspiration. She's an excellent make-up artist who has put lots of vids on there to show different styles and ideas and has some recommendations of products she rates. I've learnt a lot!

madhousewife · 23/04/2011 22:38

Moondog - bobbi brown changed my life!!
I threw out all my old makeup (well, it's in the back of my closet, I couldn't bear to throw it out just in case!!), but I have a lovely, slick, slim case that keeps all my bb makeup, I pull it out every morning, do my face and feel FABULOUS! The girl at bb did a fantastic job.

moondog · 24/04/2011 15:08

Yes indeed.
i nearly fainted when i came tp pay for all the stuff she recommended but you know what?
It was (is) worth every penny.)
