Big messy buns

trixymalixy · 19/04/2011 17:42

hair buns that is.

I would like to perfect the big messy buns that seem to be in at the moment. I have loads of really thick hair, but can't seem to get the bun to be very big.

Are they using some sort of widget inside the bun? Or do I just not have the right technique? Can anyone help and save me from staring at the back of girl's heads on the train?

I have seen in Boots these things that look like doughnuts - made out od a spnge type material. I think you grip your hair around it to create the desired effect!

CMOTdibbler · 19/04/2011 17:56

Yes, you need a doughnut. Or a sock roughly your hair colour with the toe cut off and rolled up on itself.

Put your hair in a ponytail, slide doughnut over, stick finger down ponytail to split it, spread hair out, then put another band over the doughnut. You can then wrap ends round/curl them and pin in or whatever you choose

Google sock bun, lots of youtube videos, but yes you need a sock Grin

TethersEnd · 19/04/2011 17:58

I can't get my hair to cover my doughnut at all.

chocolatecoveredrationalist · 19/04/2011 21:57

The doughnuts are inferior to a sock I promise you :)

trixymalixy · 19/04/2011 22:26

Oh ok, will try a sock! Will have to buy brown socks though!!

I use black socks for dd1 who has brown hair with no issues.

tulpe · 19/04/2011 23:20

This is why I love MN :)

Just cut up a brown sock and was not convinced this was going to enable a chic up do.....then...voila! Thank you very much for this brilliant tip!

I bought a donut last year and have never managed to get my hair to cover it. Am v v v pleased and impressed.......although slightly concerned it will come undone and people will wonder why I have a sock in my hair Blush

CelestialstarlightsPassion · 21/04/2011 11:55

I did the sock thing this morning and ...it worked. Yaay! Lovely messy bun. I love it Grin

aquavit · 21/04/2011 12:39

Brilliant! I've got my very first sock bun in. Had no idea I could make my hair (rather short at present and annoyingly fine) do this! Yay.

chocolatecoveredrationalist · 21/04/2011 13:06

Very pleased it worked well for you all - Tulpe I too have the fear of revealing the sock - I use several pins to try & head of that rather odd experience :)

JennyPiccolo · 21/04/2011 13:13

i do it without sock or doughnut by putting hair in a pony, taking v small sections of hair, backcombing and then pinning up.

SomersetBelle · 21/04/2011 14:21

Thank you so much for this thread! I now have a, a use for all the odd socks knocking around, and b, a lovely bun. Win win all round.

trixymalixy · 24/04/2011 12:29

Brilliant thanks everyone!! I tried both the sock and the donut and prefer the donut.

Have a big messy bun in today, only problem is that I keep bumping it off the low doorframes in my DILs house, so it prob won't stay in for long!!!

Is this where all the socks go..?
