Am I too old to wear . . .

this dress ?

I'm 36, 5ft 1, size 8, do not look young for my age, in fact with dc3 only 6 months old look pretty haggered at present. Worried I'll scare people who've approached from behind when I turn round!

I find with my short legs dress length is really hard, I suit short better as longer dresses either drown me or make me look stumpy, even short doesn't look short really, but worry I'm just too old now?

Its lovely, you are defo not too old, I would wear it, I am same age and height as you, maybe a little bit rounder (10/12). I would be cautious of the racer back - Bra issues, and that being diddy the smock style doesn't swamp your frame. Spot on pattern though. You won't know until you try it, so give it a go xx

tulpe · 15/04/2011 23:23

It is lovely. I would wear it and I am 40.

I already own a couple of Johnnie B things: dress, tees and jeans. I would order it in medium if you are a size 8. I am also an 8 and the dress I have is a large and, tbh, is a bit too loose (also tunic style as per your choice). It was fine last year as I had just had tummy tuck and wanted very loose clothing but not sure about this year.

Thank you, will give it a go I think, really need some summery clothes. Thanks for sizing tip too as was going to order large!

Try their skinny jeans too!

hmmSleep · 16/04/2011 09:51

Ooh, will do, skinny jeans might look good under the dress.

It's lovely! So nice. Definately not too old for it and as you say it won't be that short on you as you are short. Plus it sounds like yu have a great figure.

I'm mid 30s too and have found I need to wear blusher now otherwise I look like death warmed up.

Bellebelle · 16/04/2011 18:15

Definitely not too old. Very glad to find others who also buy from the Johnnie B range, I think DH is fed up of my "are you sure I'm not too old for it?" before every order but I have some really nice bits from there.

Was considering the skinny jeans and will defo try now Smile

wendihouse22 · 16/04/2011 18:58

Really pretty.....buy it. You sound really petite.

I'd have worn it at 36+

hmmSleep · 16/04/2011 21:07

Well, I've ordered the dress . . . and the skinny jeans! Let's hope they fit Smile.

Looks a bit like a night-dress to me, sorry....

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/04/2011 21:19

Why on earth would your age have anything to do with whether or not you should wear this?

If it fits you, it suits you and you feel comfortable in it - buy it!

hmmSleep · 16/04/2011 21:47

ChoccoVersial, you're not supposed to say anything negative now I've ordered it!

BecauseImWoeufIt, I'm worried that from the back I'll look about 20, then I'll turn round and people will step back in shock and grimace at my wrinkly old face Grin.

Maybe I should forget the dress and invest in botox instead?

CointreauVersial · 16/04/2011 21:50

Oh sorry, just my humble opinion, don't listen to me....nothing to do with age, though! I'm sure you don't look old and wrinkly.

BecauseImWoeufIt · 16/04/2011 22:46

If you're 36 and a size 8 I doubt very much that you look old and wrinkly.

hmmSleep · 21/04/2011 08:42

They arrived yesterday, and sadly sending back. The jeans were too big, although could tell they would be fab in the right size. I kind of knew they would be but they'd sold out of my size so I risked sizing up. The dress made me look shapeless and a bit pregnant, just hung down from my chest, again this would be fine if small chested (which I normally am) but at the moment I'm breastfeeding so it just didn't suit.

I'm now considering this instead.

I want a summer dress!

I was going to say that in general one is not too old for a dress, just the wrong shape (or too old and sensible to wear something that is a bit teenage fashion victimy).

Then I saw it was from the teen range! :o

Shame it wasn't nice in the real world.

Butterbur · 21/04/2011 10:14

That new dress is pretty shapeless, Hmmsleep. It hangs like a sack even on the model - you'd have to be a real hardbody to pull it off. And it's going to be difficult to hide a sturdy breast-feeding bra under those little straps.

hmmSleep · 21/04/2011 10:23

Oh dear, I can tell I'm not going to find anything suitable. The bra thing isn't a problem, even breastfeeding I'm pretty small so getting away with vests with built in support, I don't mind the layered look of vest under dress.

I used to be really good at picking out clothes that suited me but lately I just can't find a thing I feel good in. Dh looked after the 3 dcs last weekend so I could go shopping for a few hours on my own and I returned with nothing!
