What clothes/shoes to buy in New York?

I will be going to NYC for a week sans DC or DH (yippie!) and am already planning which shops/brands I want to shop in/for for myself and the DC (5 years old).

What do you think is a real bargain or special brand we cannot get in Europe?

I am thinking GAP, oshkosh, tea collection ...

Gap isn't any cheaper full price in NYC, but they do have more discounts - it tends to be on a specific thing at a time so they will have e.g. 30% off sweaters for a week, then move on to something else. Old Navy, which isn't available in the UK, is the cheaper brand in the Gap chain, and has some excellent bargains for kids.

Anthropologie is cheaper in the US, if you like their stuff.

Century 21 is a discount department store and is definitely worth a look.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the other department stores, they are not all that different from department stores everywhere else. You'll have more fun wandering around the little shops in Greenwich Village.

If you are really serious about bargain-hunting you can leave the city and go to an outlet mall in New Jersey. I know people have posted on here about them before, so you could maybe search old threads.
