Is there anywhere I can buy elegant hair accessories for a grown-up woman?

As above really -- is there anywhere I can buy a decent hairclip which isn't plasticky, glittery or adorned with a polyester flower? Every time I search the web the words 'glitz' and 'bling' assault my eyes. There do seem to be people making higher quality stuff, but it's all for brides, so covered in pearls and diamante. Harrumph.

Where are you? If you're in London there's some really nice stuff in Harrods and Harvey Nichols (Cherry Chau and Jonny loves Rosie) there's a shop called the Head Gardener on Knightsbridge that has some very nice tortoiseshell stuff too. I'm sure you must be able to find it online if you're not near any really big stores. I know what you mean about bling and brides.
Also, maybe try Hair HQ online, they sometimes have some nice stuff.

I'm not in London, but go quite a lot for work, and I remember some of those names now you mention them. Nice tortoisehsell sounds just like what I want, and I didn't know about Head Gardener. Ta very much .
