Is there such a thing as a maxi dress that doesn't make you look pregnant?

I do love a good maxi dress, they cover my hideous knees and legs (and I can be extra slutty and not bother with any hair removal from above the ankle :o) but unless I'm hoisted in to some ridiculously uncomfortable corset type contraction or I spend all day sucking my stomach in I look about 7 months pg in them. Mostly because they're always empire line. Is there such a thing as a flattering Maxi dress that isn't empire line?

Not if you weigh more than 6 stone...

Jellyrollgumdrop · 11/04/2011 16:10

Was looking at some nice ones on Tesco direct this morning, because I am pg & wont have to suck my tummy in Smile but they would be even nicer on non pg person & theyre inexpensive!!

MikeRotch · 11/04/2011 16:10

..or a twat for that matter

DonaAna · 11/04/2011 16:12

No. They only look good if you are model-thin. If you are wearing a maxi to hide something, you are wearing it for the wrong reasons.

headfairy · 11/04/2011 16:56

damn, I was hoping I could avoid getting my knees out and scaring the kids this summer!

ACtually what about this one from Phase 8?
I am almost tempted...

vonnyh · 11/04/2011 17:18

I have this one from Phase 8 www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/warehouse/Dresses/Sylvie-Maxi-Dress/201336050, in purple. It's lovely on, and i don't look pregnant in it. I don't have much of a chest though, so maybe that helps! And I'm 5' 9" and find most dresses come up too short on me. I love maxis!

Buy maxi dress. Buy belt. Sorted. Obviously it needs to be a thick fabric belt not a thin leather one.

headfairy · 11/04/2011 19:55

ooh Lilred, good idea. I've always quite fancied one of those japanesey style belts - can't think of the proper name, but they're quite wide and kind of wrap round you a couple of times and tie at the front. Usually very soft leather.

Yes, I know - are they Obi belts? I think they're very pretty, anyway.

Since I am a fat generous hourglass, I love my belts!

headfairy · 11/04/2011 20:13

that's it, an Obi belt! I used to be hour glass before kids, now the middle bit of the hourglass is a bit flabby and needs cinching in with industrial supports

oooh, ASOS have them... now to find a pretty dress to go with it!

JaneS · 11/04/2011 22:50

Oh, I'm well cinched in too.

Liking the ASOS ... hmm, I may also grab one, though that feels slightly cheeky now you've found it! Grin

I got this the other day, the pattern is v clever at hiding lumps & bumps, and I don't think (hope!) that it makes me look preggers...

PS looks much nicer on than in the pic!

JaneS · 11/04/2011 23:11

Ooh, I think I saw that on someone! It's lovely, very pretty.

headfairy · 11/04/2011 23:33

Lilred, so long as you don't either live in my road or work at the same place as me, be as cheeky as you like :o Payday on Friday, I will be purchasing one then - woo hooo!

Grin I imagine we're ok.

I have often wondered at weddings and so on if half the well-dressed ladies in the room are regulars here. I imagine tethersend would be amazing in RL.

Jellyrollgumdrop · 12/04/2011 14:12

Phase eight ones are lovely Smile
