Sorry but I do love my Maxi dresses, However I totally agree that as with all sudden fashion trends some people do get it very wrong. You only have to look at harem pants....need I say more?

sassyTHEFIRST · 11/04/2011 08:10

Absolutely agree. Hate the flowy ones, you have to be 6ft and size 8 to not look like an extra from Fantasia (think hippos in tutus) and the tighter jersey ones give most people love handles. And they are so ubiquitous.

Jilkh · 11/04/2011 14:57

I agree they can look ridiculous, but on the whole...total godsend.

EasterChickAndRabbitKurri · 11/04/2011 15:12

I don't like the strapless ones people have to keep hitching up over their breasts. But some are nice.

cybbo · 11/04/2011 15:13

yes yes I AGREE

Soo naff and so many cheapo stall type shops (the ones that blare music out from speakers ) are selling them for about a fiver so EVERYONE will be maxi'ed up

ALL with a cropped denim jacket and sandals

stressheaderic · 11/04/2011 15:15

Hate 'em. My long legs are my only decent feature (everything else is crinkly, wobbly or gone south) so I like to get them out in summer.

Also wafting about in one makes me feel a bit, well, scruffy... like I'm wearing my dressing gown or something.
Some really cheap and nasty ones about at the moment too.

BunnyLebowski · 11/04/2011 15:16

I agree. Can't swing a cat round here without hitting 15 women all wearing the same uniform that cyb describes (maxi, denim jacket and glads).

For the 1 out of the 15 that's at least 5'8 and at most a size 12 then yes it looks fine (if a tad fashion victimy) but for the rest? Hell no.

Spangers · 11/04/2011 15:58

Possibly, I never did the gypsy skirt thing back then but last summer I bought 2 maxi dresses and 1 maxi skirt. They are the plain jersey ones in dark colours, I like the patterened ones but only for holidays I think.

They are a bit ubiquitous but a lifesaver for me when it gets too hot for jeans as I can't do bare legs in public.

noddyholder · 11/04/2011 23:43

All the dodgy looking older women you know the ones whose husbands say Oh yes Jean keeps herself nice. Over blonde over tanned over 50 all wearing them here big bold lookatme print short pale Jean jacket and gold gladiators and a fag. Like Lily savage meets meg matthews

sharbie · 11/04/2011 23:45

i am always a long skirt type of gal so this trend suits me fine.loads in shops i can wear.

MrsMc82 · 12/04/2011 12:30

:o :o :o :o at "Lily savage meets meg matthews" hilarious!!!

longislandicetea · 12/04/2011 12:59

noddy My auntie's called Jean and she has a nice tan plus her husband's right she does look good for her age, as for the fags, she's trying to give up! Wink

noddyholder · 12/04/2011 13:00

Grin This particular jean stepped on my foot with her bloody gladiators and I have a humungous bruise! She wasn't exactly svelte either!

Pinkjenny · 12/04/2011 13:01

Mike - stop it. You're ruining it for me now!

longislandicetea · 12/04/2011 13:01

Sound like her! Grin

TrillianAstra · 12/04/2011 13:03

Crap ones are crap

Nice ones are nice

Like most things (except Crocs and Uggs where buying the "proper" one doesn't sotp it frm being ugly)

longislandicetea · 12/04/2011 13:07

lol. What is that all about, grown women and men in crocs. I saw a woman at the park yesterday in bright orange crocs with a paisley gypsy style maxi dress on. Now I'm not one to judge, but well............

tulpe · 12/04/2011 14:22

maxi and crocs??

just say no, kids.

Stay away from: polyester, migraine inducing prints and acres of fabric.

Look for: cotton, A-line and either plain colour or a very simple pattern.
