Been invited to a 'bling' party...

...and my wardrobe is so not bling! I do have some decent pairs of black trousers so was thinking of a bling-ish top. If at all possible I would like it to be nice as well, so I can wear it to my friend's 50th (dinner at a restaurant) on Friday.

Any ideas?? I am a 14 on top with medium sized boobs. Black makes me look sallow.

I haven't heard of a bling party, but bling means diamonds. I don't know why the term has changed to mean flashy/ expensive.

if i was invited to a bling party i would turn up dressed as liitle kim and dh would be puff daddy , is this not what this is?

Oh yes, I was assuming an themed party rather than a posh do. Obviously the blingy tat I linked to is no good at all for the latter.

If it's a posh party, do you have shoes and what's your budget?

The blingy jewellery is great but chokers don't suit me for some reason (and I have a moley neck which I wish to draw attention from and not to ). I like the navy top but I couldn't wear it with black trousers could I? Floaty tops make me look pregnant - am better with fitted as have a fairly good waist. I saw a top similar to this in Next but it was a vest top and back - same jewelled neck line though. Maybe the jewels would mitigate against sallowness...??

Choakers don't suit me either but there are plently of cheap bling necklace sets on ebay too. I think any item of clothing that's bling enough in it's own right to work for a 'bling party' is going to be too OTT for RL. It really would be best to seperate the two occasions IMHO, then you could get a top you actually like for your friend's birthday.

The "black tie" part of the invite makes me suspect most people will wear dresses, black top and trousers would probably be OK, but not if all black doesn't suit you. Do you have a simple, solid colour, formal-ish dress you could dress up?

This is black, but the sequins might alleviate the sallowing effect, super cheap. Definitely bling.

I assumed you meant loads of gold and diamonte(?) jewellery eg rapper style!!!!

If it means black tie then I think a dress is better than trousers.
Why not try a floaty style summer dress?

OK, I would take that wording as meaning formal evening wear, ball glamorous evening dresses/cocktail dresses, and really go for it with the costume jewellery, diamante, sparkly, OTT heels.

You could always phone and ask for clarification otherwise if people interpret it wrongly they might go dressed like pimps and their bitches!

Yes I agree it probably means ball gowns etc - aarrrghhh! I don't have one. In fact I only possess two dresses and they're both of the cottony summer kind. I'm not keen to pay out a lot of money for something horrendous that I'm never going to wear again - think I will hit the charity shops this afternoon. Having said that the first Asos dress is a definite possibility even if it will make me look like a large glittery condom.

The other option is to get myself an LBD - I do need one - wear it elegantly(!) to my friend's 50th and then drape myself in gold and diamante for the bling party. It's not really the season for LBDs though is it? And legs are a bit of a problem - chunky thighs, calves and ankles.

I sound lovely don't I?. I have got some good bits - my top half isnt bad at all - but I really have problems with dress length - short emphasises thighs, and ditto with anything that approaches calves. Am tall too - 5.9. Trousers really do suit me best.

I once went to a black tie do where a woman wore a black trouser suit, an open necked white shirt and had a black bow tie hanging loose around her neck and she looked FAB-U-LOUS. Take a certain 'type' to pull it off though. I'd look just about as bad as I could look in that, but it suited her perfectly.

I agree Mike - black tie = fine, but black tie with specified 'added bling' conjures up all sort of unpleasant images for me, largely involving people who don't get out in civilised company very often. I might not want to go that party..........

In light of my name, I feel I have to get involved here

I would not feel obliged to wear a bling top. Bling, to my mind, is all in the accessories and shiny details. You could wear black trousers and your favourite black top (because to do bling properly, you need to look good so wearing a top because it's "blingy" would totally defeat the purpose) but then Bling It Up with a few options eg:

Long dangly shiney earrings
If you don't wear chokers, get yourself a long necklace that can either be tied or just hang long that is either filled with bling or that is simple with one huge piece of bling at the end. Depending on your top, you could wear the necklace backwards down your back.
Shoes - a bit of bling on the shoes can work well. I'm afraid heels are essential but do you have any that have sparkles? Or if not, plain heels to which you can attach sparkles (Claires accessories is great for this kind of thing).
Big, blingy, cocktail rings. I find the best ones are at the costume jewellery counters in department stores. Most of them have sales currently so shouldn't be expensive.

Then of course, there's hair and make up - you could make sure you get a bit of sparkle dust on your cheekbones and cleavage. Or wind something shiney in your hair. Ditto, nails should be bright and not subtle.

I love a bit of bling!

I just read your post - took me a while to write mine.

I don't think you need a dress. If trousers suit you best, stick with them. And wear your sexiest top that sets of your lovely upper half. Honestly, bling works best when you are looking sexy underneath.

If it's black tie, Swarovski crystal would probably be better than diamante and you might be able to find something that fits the bill and that you're likely to wear again. A friend designed these for me to go to a Guys and Dolls party and I still wear them for nights on the town, although I'm usually more a Silver and maxi dress kinda girl. If you can't find anything you like, give me a shout and I'll see if she can whip something up for you and snag you a discount :)

I've worn a tux (with killer heels) to a black tie ball, rather as Fellatio describes. It was surprisingly sexy
