hello

me and dh are off to LA for a week next month and i need to sort out what i am going to take with me clothes / shoes wise, i don't want to take absolutely LOADS of stuff, but i want to look good while i am out there. its going to be quite a party holiday as we are not taking the DCs and have friends who live out there that we will be spending lots of time time with. we will be doing stuff like going to sunset strip to bars etc in the evenings and we will probably try to get to a gig or two. then maybe a bit of shopping, sightseeing in the day if not too hungover

it will be really hot as well apparently. oh and i am 31.

I have no idea.
I have never been to la.
I will never go there. I will never go there in April or June jet alone may.

I am therefore glued to this thread.

OK, I have been twice to LA in May. It will probably be v hot, not necessarily.

LA is a very casual town - you should go for nice jeans with nice tops, flip flops type look. Ethnic jewellery. Simple sundresses with denim jacket. Couple of scarves for chilly evenings and restaurants with over-zealous aircon. Good shopping so you are sure to make a few purchases.

HTH

mikerotch okaaayy... Confused

mumonahottinroof thank you for your help, that kind of stuff sounds like the kind of thing i wear in the summer anyway. and won't take up too much room in my suitcase :o

and i definitely intend to do some shopping while we are out there. any suggestions of good shopping areas? where did you stay while you were out there, we are staying in santa monica.

shorts or 3/4 length trousers, thin sandals and tunics will be fine.
Plenty of people, including women age 30-50, will be in plain t-shirts and shorts or jeans with sneakers (trainers to you).
Do you not know what a surfer look is? That's ubiquitous now. That counts as "casual smart" in SoCal.
Should not be "very hot". Is wrong time of year for Santa Anas.
Should be quite cloudy all day near the coast ("May Gloom brings June Doom").
Still bright enough to want sunglasses.
Coastal Southern California is a nice place to live because it tends to be neither hot nor cold.
Cannot comment on shopping, not my thing. But ask for Venice Beach if you want freaky extremist SoCal experience (and plenty of shopping there, DD's school rucksack I bought there, come to think of it).

There's loads of good shopping in Santa Monica - all the brands, plus more and for more alternativey stuff I do love Venice, it can be a bit rough and ready and not to all tastes. Rodeo Drive if you want the touristy LA Pretty Woman experience with Barneys and other dept stores and chain stores also nearby. People will guide you to Malls like the Grove and the Beverly Centre but I think they are totally overhyped and certainly not worth a detour.

And yes, it's true, it may not be so hot by the coast, I always stay in West Hollywood, daarling Wink where it has always been boiling in May.

LA is fabulous.

We went in Oct/Nov - very warm

Agree with all what lljkk says.
