To wash/not to wash hair before salon dye?

I have a cut & colour booked tomorrow for 10am. In-laws dropped in for dinner so I didn't get a chance to wash it this evening, so normally I'd do it in the morning.

Does washing your hair before a dye-job make a difference? I'm sure years ago I read somewhere not to wash beforehand or it wouldn't take so well??

On the other hand I'd be rather embarrassed to go into the hairdressers with my hair very greasy!!

Opinions please!

My hairdresser always washes it first.....that better be the right thing to do it costs me a fortune!

I thinks it's best not to wash your hair before having it dyed, I don't think it takes as well. Would it be that greasy?

I always make sure my hair hasn't been washed for a couple of days before I get my highlights done, it is much much easier for the hairdresser to do the foils etc, easier to manage etc .

It'll be really greasy! I normally wash it every day if I'm wearing it down, or at least every other day if I can clip it up, so tomorrow mid-morning it'll be rank!!

I never get it done in the hairdressers so I don't want to bugger it up!

They will wash it if they really think it needs doing but I really do think you will be fine.

I'm sure they have seen worse Grin

You shouldn't wash your hair before you have your hair dyed, though can rinse it. You need a layer of grease on your scalp to protect it from the dye - if you wash your hair then you'll also wash your scalp and it too will take the dye. I leave my hair unwashed for about 4 days before I get mine dyed - otherwise I get an orange head as well as hair. Hope that makes sense.

Yes I have highlights, they always wash it first?! Always have, its a really lovely hairdresser too. Maybe its because its highlights?

I worked and trained as a hairdresser many moons ago and we would never wash hair first for a permanent. Can't remember doing it for highlights or when I've had highlights either but maybe that's changed.

So I'm guessing they wash and dry your hair then wash and dry again after the highlights? You must be in there a while? As long as you hair colour stays and you're happy with it then it's not a problem.
