and am sweating about it already. he doesn't get married till end August, but my mum is coming down in May, and wants to go shopping for an outfit.

it must be
either a longish sskirt or trousers (she is very concious of swollen ankles)
not too expensive( although she doesn't know this yet, but Dh and I are going to give her £50 towards it)
also, even though it's a very small ceremony follwed by huge party, i feel she should wear a hat, being mother of the groom, but she won't.

Any ideas which shops I can take her into?

We will have the same problem next year. My mum is so concious about her varicose veins and weight. I think that I will take my mum to Debenhams or John Lewis.

I would second the major department stores such as JL, HoF and Debenhams. What about a jeweled hair clip instead of a hat or fascinator? Althoughh if you can get her to try a few hats on she may decide she likes one.

I would book a personal shopping session in John Lewis/HoF or Debenhams and go with your mum.

They will be used to doing this.

I would also look at somewhere like Phase 8. They have a good selection of flattering outfits, often with jackets/variable lengths etc which are good for weddings. Prices are also very reasonable.

I got my mum a fabulous Jacques Vert outfit on ebay for £50 ! Long jersey crepe dress, pink jacket, black and pink hat, handbag. I had been dreading getting her dressed nicely for dbs wedding, but it worked out great and she looked lovely.

Well worth a look imo - theres loads of MoB/MoG outfits that have been worn once

Also, I think Fenn Wright Manson is good for flattering, soft outfits for older ladies. You can get it at department stores and they do a few stand alone stores.

Yes my mum got a Fenn Wright Manson dress recently and loved it.
