Hey, am going shopping on Friday to eventually buy the 1 dress for 3 occasions....have seen some lovely ones in Karen Millen. BUT, I'm between an 18 / 16 at the moment.

Can anyone give me idea of sizing ? is it generous or meagre ?

TIA.

Wow, just been on Reiss website and they stop at size 14! Hmm

I didn't think that happened any more, sorry. I assumed they would do normal sizes.

Northumberlandlass · 31/03/2011 12:19

I would like to say my weight loss was due to magic, but alas no....have taken up running and I eat all my food from a breakfast plate ! Grin

I'm still looking btw...the big shopping day is tomorrow !

Hobbs is quite generous on sixing IME and they have some very wedding-suitable dresses at the moment. Not sure what size they go up to though.

Northumberlandlass · 31/03/2011 12:39

Thanks minipie - will have a look at Hobbs too Smile

I always found KM bottom halves bigger than other brands.
Agree about boobage issues for tops though. May not have that problem now

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 31/03/2011 15:55

Phase Eight have tons of wedding type dresses in and they go up to size 18,plus they always have stuff on sale.

Northumberlandlass · 31/03/2011 16:02

I've had a look at Phase Eight - the dress is required for a 50th party, black tie 'do', possible evening wedding 'do' and a 40th birthday. So ideally something stunning which can done up etc.

I will try some on tomorrow...getting excited now and money burning a hole in my pocket !

karen millen bottom halves are quite generous but their tops and dresses are VERY VERY tiny - need to go up at least 1 size but they do have a magic slimming effect - agree try phase 8 and sometimes l k bennett

By the way, a tip re Hobbs - they have a lot of older season stuff on their website under "Outlet", sometimes not available in all sizes of course, but worth a look for a wider range.

Also they will get the online stuff sent to your local shop for you to try on. (I think you have to buy it online, then select "deliver to store" option, then go to the store and return it there & then for a refund if you don't like it - bit fiddly but no delivery charges to pay).

I like this.

Northumberlandlass · 01/04/2011 18:42

Ladies, just thought I would update.

I went to Karen Millen in Fenwicks and tried on the black dress in one of my first emails. It fitted (good news & am confirmed size 16 woo hoo) however I did feel like a hooker (bad news, not the look I was going for).

I have tried on dozens of dresses today...and ended up in Phase Eight.

Have bought this one which I wasn't keen on, on the website. But it is just lovely on.

www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/warehouse/Dresses/Verity-Dress/201198787

PLUS, John Lewis had a 20% off day so got the dress for £88 !

Have some plain black shoes for the party tomorrow, but think I need something with colour for the black tie 'do'.

Any ideas ?

x

that's gorgeous!

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 01/04/2011 18:51

oh that looks lovely, very Mad Men Christina Hendricks.

ValiumSoltera · 01/04/2011 18:56

I find their dresses ridiculously short. Maybe I'm an old fart, but I just feel a bit slutty not very classy in a dress that is six whole inches above my knee, and I'm small. Taller women must look like they're just wearing a top in a karen millen dress.

Northumberlandlass · 01/04/2011 18:59

The Phase Eight dress hangs beautifully, length good too.

ValiumSoltera I did like the KM dress, but it was short...I do have long legs ! I could of bought it, but for £140 it had to be the PERFECT dress and it really wasn't.

cornsilkily - I tried on the floral dress which we both loved in KM, but that was VERY short....

ValiumSoltera · 01/04/2011 19:06

yes, same here, for that money I would buy a dress but only if it was absolutely perfect. I just wouldn't be comfortable with that much leg on show. who are all these people who are happy to go around with yards of leg and flesh on show. Oh yes, young people. Grin I'm not that old.....

ValiumSoltera · 01/04/2011 19:06

ps phase-eight has some lovely dresses. the one you bought is lovely.

Northumberlandlass · 01/04/2011 19:07

I'm not that old either....oh hang on...am 39 this year ! Bugger.

OP posts:
cornsilkily · 01/04/2011 21:11

short is not good

ValiumSoltera · 01/04/2011 21:19

that's what i thought cornsilkily. I don't want to look puritanical... but I'm thinking that two inches above the top of the knee is about as short as I really want to go now at 41.

cornsilkily · 01/04/2011 21:21

me too - except on hols and then it's not so bad. My legs are buff but I am so not doing the mutton look.

ninah · 01/04/2011 21:26

I don't mind short layered winter stuff with opaques and boots. have a quite short cord skirt. But prob not dress. Nuts really, as shorts are fine.
agree with the boob comments. wish km did cater for a bit more chest
