Smart dress code

I'm taking my bf to Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's for lunch for his birthday next weekend.

It's a surprise, and I'd prefer not to have to give too much away, but the dress code is 'smart', so I'll have to give him some pointers on what to wear.

So what should I tell him to wear? No jeans, trainers, t-shirts -- that much I know. But I'm lost as to what 'smart dress code' means for men. Does he need to wear a tie? Surely not a whole suit?

We'll probably stay in town for most of the day -- I'm going to take him to buy something he wants in Selfridge's and we'll probably meet a friend of mine for drinks early evening, so I don't want him to be uncomfortable all day.

He normally dresses beautifully IMO, so it's not like he's some oaf who can't dress himself! It's just that he wouldn't ordinarily dress that smartly on a Saturday.

I have no idea what to wear myself, tbh, but I'm pretty sure I can work it out Grin

I'd suggest a trendy shirt and jacket. Don't think a tie is necessary.

Have fun :-)

Thank you :)

I didn't think a tie would be necessary either, so good to know.
