Black dress, red tights, what shoes?

MisSalLaneous · 20/03/2011 12:45

Wardrobe overhaul continued... (yet still clueless)

For work I'm buying tan and black striped

and this black dress.

I'm planning on wearing red tights with the black dress, but what colour shoes for work then? Also, with coloured tights, will a black trench type coat work with black ballet pumps for the commute, or clown outfit? Other option is beige mac, but still unsure about the walking to work shoes.

For what it's worth, I have nice (enough) tan and also black heels, so thought I might wear those if (haha) it's not cold anymore. Aircon in my office on -365 too, which doesn't exactly help. I'm just fed up of black or grey suits, which is what I tend to wear all the time.

I would not recommend red tights. Unless you are size 6-8 your legs will look like frankfurters. Or you will look "zany" like Mary Portas. Lace tights maybe if you are after a bit of interest?

cabbageroses · 20/03/2011 13:43

Oh god no- NOT red tights!

Flesh coloured or black or dark grey if you must.
Red with look extremely trashy.

MadameCastafiore · 20/03/2011 13:44

I wear lots of coloured tights and probably the best bit of my body is my legs but red tights are incredibly unfalttering.

Could you not go for maybe blue - electric blue looks good.

tethersend · 20/03/2011 13:45

Looking like Mary Portas is no bad thing in my book Wink

I would go 60s style and wear red shoes with the red tights.

Or tan shoes and thin tan belt on the black dress.

Beige mac better than black.

MerylStrop · 20/03/2011 13:47

red tights are a BAAD idea

nice dresses

I agree blue or teal tights with the black dress, or, black or flesh with the stripey, nude or nude fishnets with either

beige mac sounds fine to me

MerylStrop · 20/03/2011 13:48

I'd LOVE to look like Mary Portas, fashion wise.
I think she would say NO to red tights

tethersend · 20/03/2011 13:54

Blue tights vile- red much better.

FauxFox · 20/03/2011 13:56

Blue and red tights are both vile. Opaques work in black, grey, navy, plum, and if you are slim and going for a retro vibe ivory. That is all imho Grin

FauxFox · 20/03/2011 13:57

Oh and brown is allowed too.

lilacisinlove · 20/03/2011 14:03

I agree, definitely no to red tights.

MisSalLaneous · 20/03/2011 14:04

Hahaha, ok, I think I should skip red tights then. I kind of like the look of bright tights, but no-one has ever accused me of having size 6 - 8 legs. Sadly. Ivory out then too.

Well, I have black, so could do that for thick tights. So nude fishnets ok then if I feel like something different?

Oh, and beige mac it'll be then.

FauxFox, the brown you mentioned... Also for the skinnier of leg?

I'm a 12 and I wear chocolate brown opaques...I think they work Grin

tethersend · 20/03/2011 14:06

You forgot yellow FF Wink

FauxFox · 20/03/2011 14:06

I also wore red opaques once a few years back when I was a size 10...twas for the playschool xmas party and the 3 year olds thought they were fab Grin

FauxFox · 20/03/2011 14:07

I can't wear yellow anything without looking close to death...

MisSalLaneous · 20/03/2011 14:09

Grin FF.

I'm size 14, not big boned or anything like that, just flabby. Brown opaques with black dress? Shoes?

I once bought bright orange tights. Heaven knows why, I never wore them. Seemed like a good idea in the shop.

I can't be of much help really. I've had disastrous experiences with coloured / patterned tights.
Would advise caution. Grin

Unless you are very tall it might look odd.

Maybe high heeled shoe boots - in black suede..?

MisSalLaneous · 20/03/2011 15:21

I'm always a bit uncertain re shoe boots with shortish legs (I'm 1.67 ish) and heavy hips - worry that it might cut it shorter. Will have a look though.

In my search of shoe boot looks, I found these FC ugly ones. There should be a rule against wearing them unless you're 20. And a model. Possibly even then. Should anyone here own them though, I'm backtracking. As you can see above, I know nothing.

Btw, whilst not sure about shoe boots on me, I did like these Nine West ones.

Shoe boots and heavy ankle strap shoes are sent only to make legs look like bollards imo. Don't look good on anyone, even sticky thin celebs.

MisSalLaneous · 20/03/2011 15:45

Yes, I don't think it does me any favours. I have seen some looking nice on very trendy, skinny people, but not something I've felt comfortable with. I actually once got given some at work (design related company at the time), but I could never find anything in my wardrobe that it ever went with. Might have been me, but I liked blaming the shoes instead.
