My fingernails are fucked

maxpower · 17/03/2011 10:39

I bit my nails for years as a child so consequently, they're quite weak. I had DS in December and since then, they are breaking and splitting all the time. They are in a complete state. Any suggestions for ways to strengthen them?

Eat jelly babies!

dexter73 · 17/03/2011 10:44

I think that is an old wives tale btw but sounds tasty!

tibradden · 17/03/2011 12:49

Try a supplement called kelp or sea kelp not too sure.
But it really worked for me
HTH

cheesesarnie · 17/03/2011 12:52

im having the same trouble!might try kelp.

tulpe · 17/03/2011 12:58

massage sweet almond oil in to them twice a day. Don't use a mineral oil like baby oil. You need natural goodness :)

Also, try eating a handful of almonds each day as a snack. Works a treat for hair, skin & nails.

Soak them in milk.

Apparantly.

Can't hurt to try.

Get yourself some Sally Hansen 'hard as wraps' and paint it on. It coats the nail and protects it. Or get some Nail Envy from OPI, does the same job, but costs more.

EAt healthily, drink lots of water, get a professional manicure done. Wink

maxpower · 17/03/2011 16:27

thanks ladies! Lol dexter sadly I'm probably the only person on the planet that doesn't like jelly babies (plus then I'd be starting another thread about my teeth being rotten Wink )

will investigate the kelp, almonds and hard as wraps though

jax they are too horrific to show to anyone right now, least of all a nail technician!

Second the nail envy, seen great results with it

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 19/03/2011 10:26

My mum swears by nailtique.

Maddikins · 19/03/2011 20:21

My nails were terrible, they always split and flaked. I got Nailtiques no 2 off Amazon and after 2 weeks (you put it on once a day) I could see a massive difference.

I now have to file them down to keep them to a length I like and they never split or break.

this

It should last 1 to 2 months.

A few people have been raving about Perfectil supplements for skin but I think they work for nails and hair too

southeastastra · 19/03/2011 20:42

mine are weak, didn't think it had anything to do with biting them can it?

vaseline hand and nail formula is good imo and definitely don't buff them!

beijingaling · 19/03/2011 21:51

I love nail envy and I've also heard good things about perfectil. Sweet almond oil is wonderful on hands, nails and cuticles. Also make sure you only file in one direction.

geordieminx · 19/03/2011 21:52

Cube of jelly every day

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/03/2011 10:43

No ones mentioned mavala scientifique penetreating (sp?) nail hardener.

I'd forgotton about it till this thread. I've not had to use it for years. It was that good.

cocorouge · 20/03/2011 15:31

get perfectil really made a massive difference to my nails and they are cheap too

Oblomov · 20/03/2011 15:50

I have always had terrible ridges in my nails. I have looked and looked and looked on the internet, thinking i needed vit b/a/something/was deficient in something, all say there is not that much you can do.
I don't wear nailvarnish that much. never had fake ones. try the sally hard as nails clear strengthener. but it doesn't make any difference. I will check out some of these other suggestions.
