Can you feel your make-up?

When you wear make-up or nail varnish, are you physically aware of it? Can you feel it on your skin, lips, eyelashes, nails? Fell it from the inside, I mean, not by touching it.

Yes to both. That's why I dont usually wear them.

garlicbutter · 17/03/2011 00:23

Yes. Have you got two identical threads?

PrettyCandles · 17/03/2011 05:49

Oop, so I do. I wonder whether MNT can conflate them.

Garlicbutter, do you wear makeup regularly?

I don't notice it. I wear it every day now, cause simply, I look like I've been dug up without it on.

Also, when I was wearing foundation with SPF15 in the 80's and 90's, my sister would say "you need to let your skin breath just let the air to it!". Now, we are both late 40's (12 months between us) and she tells me she wishes she'd used "protective" makeup like me as I have far fewer age wrinkles, bless her!!

The only thing I'm probably aware of is the mascara. Formulations are so light these days.

garlicbutter · 17/03/2011 15:58

Hardly ever now, but used to wear the whole lot every day. It always surprised me when people forgot whether they had makeup on! I haven't got any allergies or anything and I can't quite see why I'd 'feel' mail polish. It must be a psychological awareness. When I'm tired I have to take everything off - even rings I wear constantly feel unbearable.

Perhaps we're just "naturally naked" Grin

garlicbutter · 17/03/2011 15:59

mail polish? I don't varnish my envelopes, honest!

PrettyCandles · 17/03/2011 18:49

I notice nail varnish. Drives me nuts, sometimes. I've tried wearing it non-stop for weeks at a time, in the hope that I would get used to it. I think the longest I ever got to was about 1month before I just could not tolerate it any more:

I can feel makeup, but not quite as badly.

frigadoon · 17/03/2011 19:18

I feel quite incapacitated by nail varnish Grin

I might notice a particularly sticky lip gloss but no I dont feel it

CointreauVersial · 17/03/2011 19:50

No, I never feel it, but I wear mineral powder foundation for precisely that reason - can't bear the "mask" feeling from some liquid foundations.

Sometimes I'm irritated by those "wind-blows-hair-onto-lipgloss" moments, but that's all.

I only wear nail varnish on special occasions, as I inevitably chip it within hours.

PrettyCandles · 17/03/2011 22:41

What is mineral powder foundation?

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 17/03/2011 22:45

Well, there are lots of brands - I use Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish. It has a little grinder which you turn to dispense a little powder. It's really fine, doesn't block pores, looks nice and sheer.

foundwanting · 17/03/2011 23:06

My hands feel ridiculously heavy when I wear nail varnish. Don't notice it on my toes though.

Can't feel make-up after about half an hour, but false eye-lashes make me very aware of the effort needed to blink.

garlicbutter · 17/03/2011 23:18

Cointreau, how did you learn to put it on? I always get horrid little cakes of the stuff on my face ... I can feel it, but the result's fabulous - if you can get it on evenly.

CointreauVersial · 17/03/2011 23:24

Some brands are more cakey than others, just try a few and see what suits. The Elizabeth Arden is my current fave, but I used a Revlon one before that (cheaper!).

I don't do anything special, just slap it on with the little puff. You are supposed to buff mineral powders so they soak in, and you don't get that powdery-granny look.

garlicbutter · 17/03/2011 23:28

Ah. Didn't know about the buffing. I still have to achieve something like even coverage first, though! Thanks.

wendihouse22 · 18/03/2011 09:16

I can't wear nail varnish. Don't know if it's a visual/sensory thing but, I put it on (years ago) and just feel ill at ease with them "dressed".

My toes always go painted, though!

Also, don't do hairdryers. I even leave the hairdresser with towelled of hair.

MoonGirl1981 · 18/03/2011 09:24

No, never feel it.

Wear both nail varnish (bright yellow this week) and make up every day and never feel it.

PrettyCandles · 19/03/2011 21:58

I wonder whether people can wear make up because they can't feel it, or can't feel it because they wear it.

Also whether anyone who feels makeup can bear to wear it all day, regularly.

icapturethecastle · 19/03/2011 22:10

Yes to feeling make up and nail varnish - (although I don't feel it on my toes). I have eye shadow and mascara on right not which is very unusual and my eyes feel quite weird.

doutzen · 19/03/2011 22:20

I can't feel it on my face - unless my eyes are having a particularly sensitive moment, I can feel the powder around them then.
Or if I've got more than 4 coats of mascara on, then they can feel heavyish

mathanxiety · 20/03/2011 06:27

I feel nail polish and hardly ever wear it on my fingernails as a result, but toenails are fine. Also foundation, so I never use that, and any lipstick that I don't use Carmex under seems to just stick to my lips and pucker them, so Carmex goes on first, though mostly it's all I wear. I use a facial moisturiser/sunscreen every day, winter as well as summer (skin cancer in the family) and I don't feel that.
