In answer to your question specifically, it's to get the publicity/money I would imagine.
It's not a look I'm partial to, but it's certainly earning her a fortune. Opera singers of old were generally thought of as being a bit on the unattractive side shall we say, so she is marketing herself as a blonde bombshell, and the rest is history.

I think she is a very pretty woman. I do not think at all that she looks 40-50. I would agree that she does not need so much make up, as I think it is a somewhat oldfashioned glamour look. I don't think she looks like a trollop at all, especially compared with vocally much less talented pop singers [where's the daffodil gone?]
