What colour works with navy?

Apart from white!

I have a great navy shift dress that I wear for work. As it's sleeveless, I need some sort of cardigan or jacket to go with it. White completely washes me out, so I probably need to go for some sort of strong colour.

Any ideas? I was wondering whether something in a mustard colour would work, but haven't been able to find anything.

Camel or orange?

NormanTheForeman · 10/03/2011 12:15

I would go for a bright pink.

WowOoo · 10/03/2011 12:18

A nice green can sometimes look nice with navy. I second camel and mustard would go too.

redgecko · 10/03/2011 12:19

Camel or orange sound good, but I'm not sure they would work with my skin tone (pale, with freckles, and light brown hair). Bright pink could be a winner...

I love charcoal grey with navy. Or any grey in fact. Although if white washes you out, you may need warmer colours or cream.

sahminspain · 10/03/2011 12:20

red can sometimes work if tied in with accessories

slim22 · 10/03/2011 12:21

Yes, camel or orange. More "professional" look would be dark grey.
Although solid colors are "de rigueur" ATM, a striped cardigan (navy and other color) would be good.

DuplicitousBitch · 10/03/2011 12:21

red and cream

noddyholder · 10/03/2011 12:22

I think primary colours look a bit air hostessy

DuplicitousBitch · 10/03/2011 12:24

yes but red and cream together with navy can look nice.

tbh i avoid navy, mostly, for that reason

redgecko · 10/03/2011 12:27

Great ideas - thanks guys! I do wear quite a lot of grey (although more in winter, and it tends to be a slightly softer / lighter grey, so not sure this would work as well as charcoal).
I wish I could get away with camel or orange, as I agree they would work really well. I like the idea of a striped cardigan - will dig around to see if I can find something suitable. I really like red, but hadn't thought about tying it in with accessories to make it work better (not generally very good at putting outfits together!).

I think light grey would look good with navy. I would wear those colours together.

redgecko · 10/03/2011 12:29

And definitely want to avoid looking like an air hostess!

The 'no black with navy' rule is totally out dated, if you were discounting black. It looks stylish and modern (so long as the pieces are of course!).

TracyK · 10/03/2011 12:37

Winter white or cream - or just another navy?

redgecko · 10/03/2011 12:46

Hadn't considered black before...

Wasn't sure about getting a navy jacket / cardigan that wasn't the same fabric as the dress. Thought this might not look quite right?

black and navy look great together. "stylish and modern" absolutely

look at inspiration from marc jacobs, sonia rykiel, DKNY

Gillybobs · 10/03/2011 12:53

I wore a navy and white dress with a dark emerald green cardi and clutch last summer and everyone loved it.

HandbagAddiction · 10/03/2011 12:56

I have a navy dress suit for work. Sometimes I wear dress and suit with a contrasting colour belt and then sometimes I just wear the dress with a cardigan. Normally purple. Looks great.

CaptainNancy · 10/03/2011 12:58

Teal, red, pale blue.

charitygirl · 10/03/2011 13:04

OR! Palest pink, putty, beige (not as strong as camel though IMO). They really are the best colours to match with anything at the mo - either navy, black, or strong primaries.

niminypiminy · 10/03/2011 14:14

Like emerald, really like citrine with navy (if you like dramatic colour combos that is), or a clashing blue such as chinese blue would be dashing.

nicole333 · 10/03/2011 14:17

Navy is one of my neutrals, so I'd want to liven it up with an accent colour. I'd probably go for pink, but I like the idea of a navy and white striped cadi to keep it more professional.

candleshoe · 10/03/2011 14:19

Navy and fuschia or with emerald green or soft gold!
