What makes someone stylish in your opinion?

A friend of mine is often described as stylish (by another friend who kindly lumps me in with herself as 'not like us' :( ) and while I agree that she generally looks nice, I can't put my finger on what it is about her that earns her that description. She is admittedly quite slim and pretty but she seems to wear jeans/shirts/boots like the rest of us - and yet I do agree that there is something about her.

Is it just one of those inbuilt things that I can never hope to achieve?

Style is about knowing what suits you and fits you.

Someone with a gaping shirt and a muffin top will never have style, despite how trendy/expensive,nice her clothes are.

That's my interpretation anyway.......!

I think good quality, timeless rather than fashionable clothes which fit well. And being well-groomed.

She's not talking about style by the sound if it. Your friend has "chic"

You are either born with it or you are not.

Doesn't mean you can't simply be stylish and look good without it.

I don't know what the difference is between chic and stylish.

My three most stylish friends all wear what suits them, good quality clothes, perfect grooming (shiny hair etc), only wear the trends that suit their body shape, good skin, subtle make-up.

Oh and they are all size 8 and moneyed. And have the time to shop. Coincidence? Envy

Oooh MissRead I was thinking about this today! I truly believe that in order to be stylish it helps to:

  1. Like and accept your body shape, so you are dressing for the person you are and not the person you wish to be. And because you accept yourself you naturally gravitate towards clothes that bring out your best features.
  1. Spend money on clothes you wear most of the time so if you spend your life in jeans, buy flattering well cut jeans.
  1. Know what it's worth spending a bit extra on, such as good tailoring.
  1. Stylish people don't replace their wardrobe every season (even if they can afford it) because some skeletal bint in a fashion mag tells them to. Neither do their wear insane and unwearable things like jumpsuits which make most of us look like we've come to mend the boiler. They update with accessories.
  1. Stylish people also have a 'thing' of their own, a little trademark. It could be a watch or a knotted scarf on their bag, or a pair of antique earrings. Something that's uniquely them.
