Ok, So What is worth spending money on?

When it comes to clothes (rather than beauty stuff) what do you think is worth spending money on?

I am quite partial to a bit of premium denim, mainly because on a cost per wear basis they seem to more than make their moneys worth as I live in jeans and they do make me feel like I am spoiling myself. Other than that, which sort of items of clothing would you spend more on and which would you spend less?

Any thoughts??

Good cashmere eg Brora is so much better than cheap cashmere. Premium denim does nothing for me and I am quite happy with Gap jeans!

Good shoes - they look good forever and feel comfortable even if you wear them from 6 am to 10 pm.
Good cashmere - looks better longer (ie no pilling). Styles are usually more flattering than the basic ones from mainstream shops.
Good coats - often the only piece of clothing others see on you. Has to fit right and have a nice feel, and wear well too.

DrNortherner · 23/02/2011 19:16

Jeans
Coat
1 good evening gown
Blazer

potplant · 23/02/2011 19:19

Bras, but then I'm a G cup so there's no such thing as a cheap bra.

A good winter coat can last me for years so I don't mind spending a bit on those.

I had some Seven jeans but they didn't fit me or look as nice as my Gap ones.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 19:21

Shoes and underwear, especially bras.

takeonme · 23/02/2011 19:21

Jeans
Bras

nancydrewfoundaclue · 23/02/2011 19:24

I always sepnd on:

Coat
Underwear
Boots
Suits
Handbags

I rarely sepnd a lot on

swimming costumes/bikinis
Summer tops/dresses
gym wear

Things that could go to either extreme:

Jeans
Shoes

whoneedssleepanyway · 23/02/2011 19:30

i always reckon good accessories can really make or break an outfit so spend on

shoes, boots, bags, sunglasses,

and also jeans

whiteswan · 23/02/2011 19:51

Ooh glad lots of people agree on jeans, but underwear really? Mine always goes grey in the wash after a few weeks (apart from black obv.) so feels like a waste to spend too much.

Is Brora really as good as it sounds or are there other good cashmere shops?

Umnitsa · 23/02/2011 20:31

Don't know about Brora; most of my cashmere is from Joseph.

countless · 23/02/2011 20:40

cosmetics. i know people often claim cheap stuff is great but i don't believe a word of it.

MavisEnderby · 23/02/2011 20:43

Coats
Bags
Perfume
Foundation/concealer

EasyCrew · 23/02/2011 20:47

Coats
Bags
Boots

Otherwise, I don't find spending more necessarily means you get better. I don't agree on jeans, either. My New Look skinnies have lasted better than my Seven jeans!

detoxdiva · 23/02/2011 20:49

Oh def underwear....finding Bravissimo after years of wearing badly fitting bras was a revelation. Proper fitting and matching undies transform your shape under your clothes and make you feel like you've made the effort even on the school run Grin

HalfTermHero · 23/02/2011 20:54

Agree that the best bet is to spend money on accessories. Expensive handbags, shoes, scarves, jewels. Together they lend even the most simple and inexpensive outfit style and panache.

MrsSeanBean · 23/02/2011 21:02

Handbag
Watch
Shoes
Haircut

Daydreaming · 23/02/2011 21:28

In the summer you can get away with cheaper things.

In winter, for me the most important things are:

  • good boots (if you look after them, they last for ages)
  • a good coat
  • dresses in nice natural fabrics like wool and silk

If you choose well, I think you can get away with cheap t-shirts and jeans.

marriednotdead · 23/02/2011 21:31

Bras (with matching bottoms of course)
Footwear
Jeans

in that order.

BelligerentGhoul · 23/02/2011 21:33

Coats
Boots
My Anglomania dress and Red Label skirt were worth every penny!
M&S Autograph merino or cashmere mix tights
Lancome mascara
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm

cruelladepoppins · 23/02/2011 21:47

Footwear.
Bras.
Coats - especially waterproofs!
