How do you keep them from falling off your shoulder? If you are pushing a pram, do you have to constantly hoik it up? I hate carrying them in my elbow, and I like to have hands free.
I have never got on with them but feel that I should. Of a certain age and feeling a bit like the rucksack look is not a good one! Also, what do you do if you need to carry A4 sized papers? Do you then have a separate bag?
Please explain practicalities and allure.

Since becoming a mum, I've switched to a messenger/satchel/cross-body style of handbag.

A friend of mine has a gorgeous Mulberry bag with a large shoulder strap so you can wear cross-body if wanted. Think Anya Hindmarch also makes bags with straps like that.

I wear a large across body too which is big enough for a laptop, or I put the straps over both handles of the pram if the bag allows...

:)

I have switched to messenger bags too. Anya Hindmarch do lovely ones. I didn't bother with a bag for the first year and stashed my stuff in DD's changing bag but my wallet and phone were stolen on two separate occasions.

I think cross body is the way to go if you need your arms free for other things. Often carry lots of A4 and books, and have to admit I often end up with a cross-body handbag and a separated tote over my arm or even shoulder - usually a Longchamp pliage.

Another messenger bag advocate here... shoulder bag would be nigh on impossible.

I like Ollie and Nic

I use this when I'm out with DD...

holds kitchen sink and goes across body with long canvas strap
