DS Communion in May - Outfit ideas for the Mum!

My DS has his Communion in early May. Hes sorted for the day but now thinking about what I'll wear. Tends to be quite dressy in my area, judging from previous occasions.

Am quite conscious in these recessionary times of both buying something I will definitely wear again, and the cost - outfit will need to have a jacket/cardi etc as weather could still be dodgy in May.

Any idea ladies as to whats out there at the moment? I dont want to look like "mother of the groom" or anything remotely like that. Am of average size and height and in early 40s and am very partial to dresses!

My sons was last May and I wore a spotty 50s style dress from Joules with a cropped cardi, lovely wedge sandals and a clutch.

I was neither the most dressy nor the most casual...some mums def looked too weddingy (eg. Coast satin bustier dress and chiffony wrap....hmmmm) and a few looked much more casual maybe with linen trousers and a satin top.

I thought I got it just right, but then I would say that...: )

ps. When my older son made his I also went for a nice dress and cardi, that time it was from Monsoon. Think Monsoon, joules and Boden all worth a look. have a lovely day

Thanks Gilly for your great help - I'm going for that very same look, somewhere in between the wedding ott look and too casual!
Your dress and accessories sounded just right!

Having a nightmare of a month so far and have not been able to get anywhere near the shops so scrambling for some ideas online if possible!

I like dress with this little cardi

or this lovely floral one with a lovely shrug

SerendipityAlways · 15/02/2011 11:40

Great, thanks Gilly!

I am busy at work at present so have limited sites access but cant wait to look at them later on, but I think I recognise the Boden dress! Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness!

FWIW I love shift style dresses and like the mad men look. Am a size 10 with curves!

tethers - Thanks! I was hoping to hear from you as I've always loved the helpful and informed advice you give on S/B!

'm at work at the moment so will have to wait until I get home to open the links - I can see some of them are lk bennett which is really interesting because that look is what I had in mind (and we have an outlet store nearby!) Cheers tethers! I will come back later

I'm wearing this to my DD's confirmation on Sunday with a short cashmere cardi in palest pink.

Gillybobs · 16/02/2011 21:42

Lilac - that is beautiful. Just perfect for the occasion

letsgetloud · 16/02/2011 23:49

Lilac - the dress is gorgeous. Will you have bare legs or where tights? What shade?

I too have my daughters communion in May and looking for inspiration. Thanks for starting this thread Seren

letsgetloud · 16/02/2011 23:50

Wear tights not where tights Hmm

SerendipityAlways · 17/02/2011 09:19

Some lovely dresses!

Lilac - lovely monsoon dress and a good price! We have a big Monsoon store in our (small) town so I'd be wary of buying there in case theres 3 of us in the same outfit!!

tethers - have fallen in love of course with the one LK bennett dress thats sold out in my size!!!

I've seen a gorgeous dress on Boden, its in their limited edition range. Am at work so can't do the linking thing but maybe some very kind MNer could do that for me, its the silk leaf dress in fuschia - opinions anyone?

I found it difficult to get something for ds communion last year. Every thing was too weddingy or too casual. Also we were having a bbq after so it had to be something I could move in. I ended up with a shift dress with 3/4 length sleeves and scoop neck.

SerendipityAlways · 17/02/2011 10:19

Eddiemc - Did you wear anythin with the dress to church? As its early May the weather can still be very unpredictable and even cold/wet on the day.

For my DD's communion, I wore a sleeveless dress and had awful trouble finding something suitable to wear with it - needless to say it rained on the day!

This time around I have vowed to be prepared for all weathers!!!
