Denim Skirts!

MoonGirl1981 · 13/02/2011 12:41

I've been dieting and can slip back into my old denim skirt.

Is a good shape for me and comes to about three inches abouve my knees.

Is also a medium-darker shade of denim.

Came from M&S so isn't one of those 'teenagery' ones. (I'm 29.)

Would it be okay to wear it now with black tights? Maybe some with a light pattern on?

What are your thoughts?

Thank you!

I would say black tights would be good. Well done on the weight loss. Will you be wearing boots with it?

pink4ever · 13/02/2011 13:01

I have also just dug my m&s denim skirt out of the drawer!(bargain-my mum got it 5 years ago for a £1!!).Forgot I had it but was inspired when I saw one of the mums at playgroup wearing hers with plain top, patterened tights and flat leather black boots. So am going to blatantly copy her look this week(or maybe go for breton style top?).

MoonGirl1981 · 13/02/2011 13:03

Yes. I have a pair of calf length Dr Martens which I wear with everything.

I usually wear skirts with tights and Dr Martens but feel that denim skirts are a tad different.

I usually wear coloured or patterned tights and black ones for work. Not worn a denim skirt in winter before so was unsure of the tights issue.

id say opaque
not sheer at all

MoonGirl1981 · 13/02/2011 13:33

Does opaque mean they're 'matt' and not 'glossy'.

Or just that you can't see through them?

I wore my denim skirt the other day with navy opaques, a navy stripe breton top and tan riding boots. I think it looked good - go for it!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 13/02/2011 13:59

Who knows where you can get a decent one? Not thigh-widening faded or distressed, not too short, not too pale, not a-line .

Has anyone tried the denim mini skirt from Boden ?

CointreauVersial · 13/02/2011 14:48

I love my denim skirt (bought from Warehouse a few months back, but sorry, WWWY, can't find it on sale now). It's quite dark, with buttons up the front, mid-thigh, and I wear it with opaque tights (any colour) and biker boots.

Denim definitely works summer or winter.

tulpe · 13/02/2011 14:53

Moongirl1981 - opaque means just can't see through them - they can be either matt or glossy.

Lotty5 - I have the Boden denim mini in indigo. It isn't particularly mini - a couple of inches above the knee rather than bum skimming Wink

I found the fit a bit difficult to decide on. Ideally, I like my skirts to sit on my hip but I found that to get that effect with the Boden one, I needed to size up which then left it too loose around thighs. So I settled for my regular size which sits slightly below natural waist. It is perfect for a smarter look with opaques and boots and will do well with flip flops and simple top for summer.

Still return to my battered old H&M version though for a far more casual look with leggings, Uggs and fitted checked shirt (in summer will wear to and from beach but wouldn't dream of wearing on school run iyswim :o )

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 13/02/2011 17:20

I bought one in M&S recently which I really like, was dark, straight and just above the knee. Wear it with either black, grey or teal opaque tights and black mid calf flat boots.

What I would like to know is where you can get black opaque tights that are truly matt, many look matt till the sun shines on them when they go all shiny, like leggings.

BelligerentGhoul · 13/02/2011 17:26

I tend to wear mine (it's a Gap one, about 5 inches above the knee) with grey or other coloured opaques and tan knee high boots. I don't like it with black opaques or black boots, which I think can look a bit too 'hooker' or 'police woman-ish' but that may just be me being weird!

tulpe · 13/02/2011 17:30

Agree with Belligerent about black boots and denim skirts. Other people look fine but I always feel hooker-ish in that combo for no fathomable reason!

I always wear mine with brown boots or ballet flats - I don't mind wearing black opaques with black ballet flats so it's definitely not the colour thats the problem.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 13/02/2011 17:54

When I get mine it's going with grey tight/boots, dark brown tights/boots, navy tights/boots. Ditto ballet pumps maybe.
< must have tights matched to footwear emoticon >

BelligerentGhoul · 13/02/2011 17:59

I love grey or purple tights with my brown boots. :)

Meggles76 · 13/02/2011 18:20

Agree with others, I tend to go for navy tights and tan biker boots or riding boots.
The common prostitute look is not really me Grin
