Brown or black mascara? What are the rules?

I have fair skin, green eyes and dark hair.

Should it be brown or black mascara?

All of a sudden I'm in sure! Blush

There are no rules! If you want to be discreet about wearing make up then brown but black would look lovely on your colouring. I would only restrict to brown if you were a shy and retiring type with make up or over about 57 (depending on the individual, of course)

purpleknittingmum · 05/02/2011 22:21

I read years ago that black is often too harsh, I always go for brown or brown/black

Havingkittens · 05/02/2011 22:24

On the other side of the coin, black can really enhance the eyes where brown can be a bit "meh"

It really depends on your personal style.

Catsmamma · 05/02/2011 22:25

I am wearing black less often tbh....over 40 and not wanting to look too try hard.

I love Badgirl lash in the burgundy, sounds weird but it's not, really brings the green up in my eyes.

I do still wear black but mainly for evenings.

BooBooGlass · 05/02/2011 22:26

I wear brown in the day and black at night, same colouring as you

QueeferSutherland · 05/02/2011 22:35

Same as Boo, brown in the daytime, black at night.

Unless, of course, I don't.

soppypreggyloon · 06/02/2011 09:53

Don't know why I was suddenly stressed by that! Blush
black it is for now but I agree on older skin/ hair colour it could be too harsh.
Once I embrace my grey I'll switch to brown but as I'm not yet 30 it'll be a while away before I accept my growing number of White hairs!

I personally think brown mascara in some cases looks better with naturally blonde hair.

Emo76 · 06/02/2011 10:08

I think either is ok as long as it isn't with a waterfall cardigan

TragicallyHip · 06/02/2011 10:12

It will depend on make/type of mascara.

I have a black and a brown, different makes. My brown is quite dark and I forget that it isn't black tbh. I wear that for day and my black is for nights out.

I am 31 btw

HTH

HelenBa · 06/02/2011 11:41

same as Boo (but hazel eyes)

cabbageroses · 06/02/2011 11:46

I think youhave to go by wha tsuits you. Unless you are very fair- Albino- then either should be okay.
I have fair skin but mid colour/dark blonde hair and use black. Brown makes my eyes disappear. Black/brown is good but very few makes do it.

missmartha · 06/02/2011 12:25

I wear both black and brown, though obviously not together.

I like a good set of eye lashes and mascara would be my desert island luxury.

Grey eyes, pale complexion and strawberry blonde hair.......well at the moment.

I am older than all of you btw.

Ooopsadaisy · 06/02/2011 12:33

Fair skin and green eyes - I would suggest brown.

I am white but my skin maintains quite a lot of colour even in winter and my hair and eyes are very dark - therefore always black for me.

I am 42 - hope I'm not making a faux pas!

Makingchanges · 06/02/2011 12:36

I had my colours done and it was recommended navy - I'd always previously worn brown - Again sounds wierd but yes it looks good, really highlights my eyes. (I have brown hair, green eyes and fair complexion)

I think its a case of try and see which looks better

It wasn't meant to be so specific. I just thought 55 was still too young to be so worried about these things but maybe before 60.lol.

I really think that it depends on the person though. Seeing as the OP is still in her 20s and has dark hair then I'd say black, or burgundy to bring out the green in her eyes.

Navy can make the whites of your eyes brighter, but it's not always easy to find. Which brand to you use Makingchanges?

wendihouse22 · 07/02/2011 09:34

I used to be a big fan of brown but as I've got older....I need more ooomph! Otherwise, I look like my eyes have disappeared.

I use black but less of it.

Do you have dark brows? I've recently been shown how to "do" my eyebrows. Just a bit, not Groucho Marx you understand, but when I can be bothered to do it, IT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE and I find I need less mascara.

echt · 07/02/2011 11:12

I was about to say: why 57, having kittens?

Have you got ishoos?

(Random-focus death-ray stare)

I will be 57 this year, so think on.
