My hair has normally been naturally straight and easy to manage. But since I started having highlights put in 18 months ago, the ends have become totally dry and knotted.

Right now, my hair's a few inches past my shoulders but it looks like I may have to cut it into a bob the way it's going. I'd love any suggestions to improve my hair's condition or if I do need to cut it off how to stop it happening again (ideally without having to stick with my natural hair colour)?

Yup, you need to have the knackered bit cut off and look after it really well afterward to reduce and delay the damage as much as possible. If you don't want to lose the length you could have the very worst cut off and then go for 6 weekly trims until it's all off.

Lashings of conditioner on the ends at each wash.

Leave in conditioner on the ends after every other wash.

Deep condition once every few weeks.

Regular trims. 6 - 8 weekly to retain length, 10 - 12 weekly to grow it.

Apply as little heat as possible.

youll be sick of seeing it on these threads but morrocan oil:) that will sort it!

GarconsSontCommeDesChiens · 31/01/2011 19:41

also get a TangleTeaser

I was just going to suggest morrocan oil treatment too Grin

picked up the recommendation on here and bought it for DD1 who has very curly and fragile/knotty hair.

It transformed it overnight. I use it myself too and I have very fine hair, so it suits different types.

make sure when the hairdresser does your highlights they are only doing the root and not pulling the colour all the way through

Thank you so much for the replies... I will definitely be getting some Morrocan Oil asap! DC2 due in June so I was thinking of getting it cut (but not too short!) before then.

I have a TangleTeaser already which gets rid of the worst of the knots but also wads of hair as it's so dry:(

The hairdresser has been a bit ott with the colour last few times when it was done so I will keep a closer eye on them next time...

I use a wide tooth comb in the shower and comb through once the conditioner is in.I also have highlights and although my hair is in good condition it is very tangly once washed.
I use Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner.
