how do i make hair dyeing easier?

about to go and dye. my hair is shoulderblade length and thick. when i dye it, it gets very tatty and combing through is painfull and takes ages. is there anything i can do to make this easier?

DO you pin up the top ssection while you work on the underneath, then release the rest of your hair in stages to rub the colour in? Its the only way I can make sure I cover all of it. You dont need to comb it through, just massage it in well
