Can you get away with skinny jeans if you ate a size 16?

My friend said I could but Im not sure. My bum isn't bad but I do have quite curvy legs especially my calves.

PMSL, ate a size 16 what? :P

I'm a size 16 and have a few pairs of skinny jeans, really depends on your shape I think. Only way to know is go try some on and take an honest friend with you :)

CrispyHedgehog · 26/01/2011 12:02

yes you can. I do make sure whatever I wear on the top half covers my belly and bum tho.

Memoo · 26/01/2011 12:02

Ah! ARE not ate :)

that was a super typo! Grin

I think it could look really good if you accessorize correctly.

A sparkly necklace or statement fascinator should do the trick. And of course plenty of attitude.

Quote from Hannah Montana: "Skinny jeans do not make you look skinny if you're fat".

Not that a 16 is fat, but even as a 10/12 they're not always particularly flattering.

The important thing with jeans is that they actually fit, even if it means going up a size. Nobody wants muffin-top or a constant wedgie! I would advise going shopping with the aforementioned honest friend, and trying on every style you can find, in various sizes if necessary. Get her to take photos on her phone so you can see what you actually look like (changing room mirrors being ridiculous, as we all know). You might find you look great, or you might find that another style suits you better.

Oh taking a photo is a hood idea!

Any one of any shale and size can wear skinny jeans. As long as they are the right size and with skinnies that usually means going up a size (or 2 depending on the shop). You could also look at Jeggings - much comfier than squeezing back into Skinnies when you've been to the loo after a meal out Wink

aquavit · 26/01/2011 12:11

remember that skinnies look much, much better with footwear (usually boots) than without. So when you're trying them on/taking photos, put your boots back on first!

and I agree that skinnies can look great on a size 16.

Mumsnut · 26/01/2011 12:14

The taller you are, the better I think.

DanceInTheDark · 26/01/2011 12:14

SHAPE not SHALE!

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 12:17

I'm a curvy 14 and prefer straight legs - they tuck into boots nicely, but don't make my arse look quite as humungous (compared to my skinny ankles) with converse/flipflops Grin

TheGratefulDead · 26/01/2011 12:23

Agree with Aquavit. If you have biggish legs and wear skinni jeans, it's best to wear calf boots for balance. In my opinion if you are a size 16 and wear skinny jeans with something like ballerina pumps, you'll look like you've got thunder thighs. You could go for something like the 'Real Straight' jeans from Gap; they're quite skinny but the leg is ever so slightly straight and gives a more flattering and balanced look.

Memoo · 26/01/2011 12:25

Ah that's good advice about the straight legs

GrimmaTheNome · 26/01/2011 12:26

I'm a size 10/12 and can't - 'sturdy' legs.
(More like fat knees, TBH.)

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 12:29

TheGratefulDead that's what I've got! Soooooo comfortable and the back pockets are just right Grin

I'm 5'4" so turn the bottoms up a couple of inches, which balances my shape when wearing flats.

MummyBerryJuice · 26/01/2011 12:33

Depends on what size you where before you ate her.

Sorry couldn't help myself.

anniepanniepears · 26/01/2011 12:35

yes with the right top

madammecholet · 26/01/2011 12:37

Size is immaterial. Skinnies either suit your shape or not. A size 10 can look crap in skinnies imo or a size 18 can look fab..

I wear skinnies with long boots always as I just prefer them that way.

Also, if you wear boots and a longer line top so it sits just on the smallest part of your thigh, mid way from knee, this can make you look like you have amazing legs which go on forever....

TRY TRY TRY them and see.:)

wendihouse22 · 26/01/2011 12:54

Wear what you like. I'm 5 ft 5 and a bit. I'm 11 stone, aged 48 and today I'm wearing my chocolate brown leggings, a lovely soft long tunic knit thing, which I've had forever and love and my new (bargain in the sale) knee length chocolate brown suede boots.

I've had several compliments on said attire. Only my mum, bless her, would say "you're a bit old/hefty/past your best to wear that".

Life's very short girl, wear what makes you comfy in your own skin.

NinkyNonker · 26/01/2011 13:09

I'm a 14 to 16 at the no and wear them a lot, under boots. My legs are quite slender and very long, so highlightibg them can make me look slimmer all over.

TheGratefulDead · 26/01/2011 13:12

purplepidjin me too!!

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 13:41

Yay for jeans twins Grin

Ashbury · 26/01/2011 14:22

Yes - if your legs are relatively slim or well toned, and a long tunic top if you want cover a jelly belly. Actually, who cares - if you feel good in them and they're comfy, then wear them!
