My question is: what make-up colours should I be wearing?

I have never been one for make-up other then mascara and eye-liner and doing the red lips thing when I dress up in vintage 1940's clothes.

However after having my hair cut short this week I feel amazing Grin and so really want to look good next Saturday to go out but have no idea were to start Confused (and am on a Budget).

I have foundation, eye-liner and mascara in black and brown, blusher.

(I also have a black and white eye shadow plus very red lip stick for a 1940's look.)

Where do I start?

If you like a 40s look then a golden brown eyeshadow is the way to go. It will also go with your colouring. Something like Saddle, Cork or Kid from MAC over the whole lower lid and a neutral beige on the brow bone. Or, beige over whole eye and brown shade in the socket. If you are true to a 40s look then they only really wore browns, it depends if you want to do a contemporary interpretation.

If you are anywhere near Hertfordshire I am doing a 40s hair & make up demo at a WWII exhibition. If you're interested I can PM you with the details.

Thanks Havingkittens I have messaged you.
I love the 40's look but I'm an odd mix of Rock, Hippy (the organic, green type not so much the multi coloured bit these days) and 40's so that sounds good on two points. Natural browns and 40'sGrin Thank you.

Has anyone else got any ideas on other colours?

Plums and greens (not at the same time) would both look nice on you. Also peachy colours with plummy browns.

Golden browns would be gorgeous. If you fancy a mineral one, have a go with Bare Minerals 'Queen Tiffany'

Taupe suits most skintones... My fav taupes are Laura Mercier Topaz, MAC Copperplate or Omega, Chanel Taupe Grise.

If you want to go more purply try MAC Shale with Sketch in the crease - but I would try in the store first, these can look a bit bruise-y if you have dark under-eye circles.

Dont forget liner - MAC Coffee is my fav brown, and the Urban Decay 24/7 ones are very good. There is a lovely plummy one called Rockstar that could work well.

Enjoy your evening!
