Shall I cut my own hair??

Should I cut my own hair??. I am totally broke, but I need a haircut. Had a bob last summer. Hasn't been cut since then, now it's a straggly shoulder length mess. I have almost picked up the scissors a few times but have chickened out.

Should I????????

Would you????????

Have you got a friend/sister/brother that could do it for you?

I do cut my fringe but wouldn't attempt anything more than that.

marge2 · 19/01/2011 11:41

DH says he'll give it a bash! Not sure though.

If you must then the MN haircut is pretty good. It sounds like your hair is probably long enough. Have a look in the archive for instructions...

Under NO circumstances must you (or DH) try a bob, it's fiendishly difficult.

marge2 · 19/01/2011 12:02

Ooooh - how do I foind this in the archive then? What do I have to click on?

Try some of these. You'll find more by using Advanced Search.

A Haaaaaa!! Found the link - Can't look though as it's not getting thorugh my work's firewall. - Will look later on!

I'll let you know if it works or whether I end up looking crap!

The snipping into the cut end of the ponytail is the most important thing, take time to do that thoroughly, otherwise it just isn't right.

I did it once and TBH I was pretty happy with the result.

Oh I checked out the video and I think I want my hair shorter than that cut to be honset. It is about that long at the back, but my hair is extremely fine and just flops so I don't think it will work for me. I got paid today - so may try and spare £15 for a proper cut.

Of course you can. I did a lovely bob on my hair before, put a beanie on and used that as a guide. Was a lot shorter than I meant it to be mind.

diddl · 20/01/2011 17:34

I don´t like the "feathery" idea of the MN haircut.

I cut my own by halving, bringing each half to the side & snip!

Easy!

marge2 · 21/01/2011 10:44

RIGHT then - I'm gonna DO IT!

Good :)

Cyb · 21/01/2011 18:26

Yes I cut my own hair just before Xmas with success

t was in a jaw length bob with straight fringe, now its a curly wavy bob with a heavy side fringe

I basically put it into 2 bunches and hacked into it!

Cyb · 21/01/2011 18:30

diddl my technique sounds like yours

And I needed no training

potplant · 21/01/2011 18:33

MN haircut is really easy and the layers hide any rogue snipping.

Give it a go and if you don't like it then you can use your £15 to get them to tidy it up.

My top tip is - once you've made the cut put the scissors away and don't go back until you've washed and dried it again. You can get a but carried away.

Where on your head were the bunches? How high? And waht about the bit at the back - will it match?

Cyb · 21/01/2011 21:02

the bunches were above ears

And the back of my hair was slightly rgraduated so I figured i wouldn't touch that bit

marge2 · 26/01/2011 14:33

I DID IT!!!! Well DH and I did it between us. I made the first hack to show DH the length I wanted and he hacked it round. Took me a few days to find all the straggly bits and snip them off, but I now have a nice neat bob !! Saved myself some nice dosh!!

Yeah, I would if I knew how to. Besides, it's only hair. It will grow back. If it is a disaster, you could find a cheap hairdresser to tidy it.

wendihouse22 · 26/01/2011 15:50

I have quite short hair (a la Lisa Maxwell - loose women) and because it grows like weeds, I do from time to time take the nail scissors to it, just to get a bit longer out of it between hairdresser visits.

Sometimes, it looks Ok. Sometimes, it looks shite and I have to go in to the salon all sheepish.

My hairdresser, God love her, is used to me now.
