Tipping mobile hairdressers

Should I tip? Is it expected and if so how much? I am based in the North of England.

I have always been led to believe that if it's the hairdressers own business, then no tipping is necessary.

However, if you're really thrilled and would like to show your appreciation, then yes, I don't see why not. I usually tip my hairdresser about 10% of the cost.

I stopped tipping a few years ago, because quite frankly prices are high enough, i find it odd that we feel the need to tip for certain things, i've never thought the service was that great in this country.

I tend to have the right money ready or pay by card so theres no need to wait for change, had a bad experience in pizza hut had to ask for my £7 change, the girl thought it was her tip.

We do tip on holiday abroad, we've always had very good service and the waiters etc are excellent with the children so i dont mind.

If i have my hair done and i'm really happy with it, the girl will know i'm pleased, i think a big smile is enough.

And as for mobile hairdressers - they set their prices so i dont think there a need to tip. We used to have a mobile hairdresser, she was very good but also very expensive, she would do the whole family every couple of months but always turn up an hour late with no explanation and make her prices up, they used to go up £5 each time, or she'd cancel at the last minute, and not return my calls, i got the hint in the end....she lost quite a few other customers too, i have no idea if this was to do with me not tipping. Anyway i've rambled.

I'd love to know! I don't tip our mobile hairdresser routinely (as it's her own business), but did round up to next £10 at Christmas.

No way, the prices are so high where I live (£85 for highlights) that I think they earn enough!

Agree with Sansucre, I would only tip if I was particularly pleased, otherwise all the money s going in their pocket anyway unlike if they work in a salon
