I am a medium brown haired, freckled and light/medium toned skin-i think i look better in white and silver as opposed to cream and gold but really want to try and get to the bottom of my skin tone etc etc....
I am at present using bare escentuals foundation in medium beige but think it is possibly a little too orange and I have read the medium shade is better for skin with a cool tone(ie pink tones). Could anyone confirm to me that though I do tan I am infact a cool skin tone...this is driving me mad(obviously not life threatening but annoying still!!)

There are not very many people with pink undertones which is why foundations with pink tones make you look mask like or orangey. You can still tan when you have cool skin tones.

Just to be really confusing some companies, such as MAC, label pink as warm toned and yellow as cool! So to avoid confusion I will just talk in terms of pink or yellow.

If you tend to go olive toned when you tan then you are likely to have a yellower tone to your skin, if you go a warmer brown and go pink in the sun, then you are probably more pink toned. Are you able to go to a make up counter, regardless of brand and ask them to tell you if they think you are more on the pink or yellow toned side?

Bobbi Brown seems to have started a rumour that practically everyone has a yellow skin tone and that yellow based foundations suit everyone which is not necessarily the case. If you don't have a yellow base to your skin tone and use a yellow toned foundation it can make you look sallow if you are pale, or ashy (greyish) if you are tanned the same way that pink based foundations can make you look orange if they are the wrong shade for you.

The best thing to do is to try foundations on your jawline and let them sit a minute as they often change colour when they oxidize and then check in a hand mirror close to natural light - ie. go to the window of the store to have a look.

look at the skin on your inner forearm . if the veins look greenish you have yellow warm tones and if they look more blue then you are cooler toned [read this somewhere on mac website i think]

sorry my keyboard is dying...

Thank god I'm a make up artist. My veins are completely invisible! I'm like a pincushion when I have blood tests trying to find the bloody things.

glovesoflove · 04/01/2011 12:56

You might not be either. I'm not, hardly any foundation works on me. MAC do some foundations which are neutral but not many, you could try them out and see? My veins are green AND blue Hmm

Have you tried a lighter shade of Bare Escentuals, IME it comes up very dark - difficult to wear for light skintones. Lily Lolo is better if you like mineral foundation, they have neutral shades too.

Take a look at the skin on your neck, not your face which can appear more ruddy because of wind, small veins. Test foundations there.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 04/01/2011 14:41

Is it out of order to advise having your colours 'done'?

(Btw, that's interesting about Bobby Brown; I'm cool-toned but I've always felt their foundation was yellowy on me.

I once let a girl do my eyes and she kept saying she was going to 'warm up' my look - was incredulous when I explained I needed cool colours to blend with my skin rather than mask it.

My eyes looked positively red.

HouseOfBamboo · 04/01/2011 14:45

What colour are your eyes? If they are blue or grey, with brown hair you are likely to have cool-toned (pink toned) skin.

Thanks for coming back to me everyone-i will try going slightly lighter on my be foundation i think......I also have decided i am most likely cool as I can wear pinks and blues better than oranges etc etc

Thanks
