Come and save me from myself: nail colours

I want to get a manicure and pedicure - what colour nails should I go for? The same colour for both seems a bit ott. Was thinking red toe nails, but then what about fingers? Could just have clear but then does it seem ridiculous to get them done instead of doing it myself? would a sort of nude be okay?

I never do fingernails but personally I think toe-nails should be as bright and garish as possible.

vanitypear · 12/12/2010 10:12

Fingers - tan/brown good right now.

Bonsoir · 12/12/2010 10:18

Toe nails should be brown (Chanel Particulière), finger nails should be scarlet, or vice versa;

sazm · 12/12/2010 10:22

you could go for bright toe nails and a french manicure

Mmmango · 12/12/2010 14:08

I like the chanel, but with red toes? really? Could do a french manicure but thought that was getting a bit old. Hmm.

You know there are only a few colours:

brown
orange
red
pink
purple
clear

Anything else is just a variation with a comedy name so manufacturers can flog a fractionally different shade to people who go "baaaa!! must have this colour because the manufacturer is giving it out free to beauty eds it's this season's must have".

Pick a colour you like, that goes with your clothes and with enough base & top coat so it doesn't fall off within 2 days.

Job done.

If you want any other pieces of ordinary common sense, which may on the face of it seem alarmingly controversial, then don't hesitate to ask me.

Nooo catinthehat, you're missing the point, which is about the combination of colours:

red & brown = not sure
red & pink =
red & orange = don't know
red & red = too red
red & purple = double
red & clear = boring, but given the other options might be the best bet.

I think the strong red/brown pressure would automatically lead me to red/orange

LoudRowdyDuck · 12/12/2010 15:18

Well it's winter, how many people will see your toes?

I'd go for a colour that will make you/DH smile, on the toes, then something tasteful and chic on fingers.

Bright purple toes and chic, dark purple fingers?

catinthehat2 · 12/12/2010 15:19

Or possibly red/green what with it being Christmas.

electra · 12/12/2010 15:21

It depends what your nails are like. The manicurist will be able to advise you. If you have enough length you could go for a french manicure on your fingers - this is popular in salons because it's very difficult to do on yourself.

Mmmango · 13/12/2010 04:35

Cat - maybe I could alternate red and green with some glittery snowflake nail art on the top?
My name is mango, and I am a stranger to style

Living somewhere hot - flip flop weather, so both sets of nails on show. But I like the idea of very short dark purple-ish fingernails. With what - light pink toes? Or brown?

I'm coming to the conclusion that actually I think you should do alternate manicures and pedicures. Only 1 colour to worry about.

I currently have orange toenails and brown fingernails (live in Dubai so toes always on show)

I like to think I don't look like a hideous seventies cushion cover

[wavers]

Pink and red is one of the most interesting colour combinations.

You can do any colour you like as long as it's not matching.

otchayaniye · 15/12/2010 10:02

What would be nice, and a departure from the ubiquitous greige is a deep emerald green creme. I've been looking for ages and found one by Illamasqua (ironically I live next door to its founder)

Mavala also do a cedar green creme and a very nice deep brown. Only 3-4 quid in John Lewis or Selfridges chemist bit.

Grumpla · 15/12/2010 10:04

Only a few colours!?!?

I have gorgeous turquoise nails at the moment. I love bright colours.
