7 for all mankind jeans - what's all the fuss about?

So, having dressed like a scarecrow for 3 years I decided to splash out before returning to the office and buy my first really posh pair of jeans (it's an office wear jeans are acceptable if that didn't make sense initially btw). Now, obviously I don't have a clue about anything designer but £150-£180 for a pair of jeans does seem a bit mad. Went for 7 jeans because I'd heard so much about them and I have found a pair that fit very nicely (kimmie, straight leg, in case you're interested) but can they really be that much better than other labels? I'm not sure if I can justify spending that much on jeans even though they are budgeted for and I haven't spent money on clothes for many moons.

Your views please mesdames

And actually, while we're on the subject, what jeans do you like?

I'm interested in all this talk of high-waisted jeans and how flattering they are. I just couldn't bring myself to try any on but sounds as if I should have done. Am also slightly concerned that I may have bought the wrong cut for me. Went for the kimmie www.7forallmankind.com/KIMMIE_STRAIGHT_LEG_IN_HEUREUX_BLUE/pd/np/93/p/4685.html but have now read that it's "designed especially for the curvy girl" - now curvy I ain't, so I wonder if I've just picked them because I they felt comfortable and familiar and because i have inherent suspicion of skinny jeans that I'm trying to overcome - in which case I may have just bought some slightly baggy and unflattering but very expensive jeans. Damn, I do wish I had some bloody idea what looks good and what doesn't. I find the whole thing completely baffling.

Oh yes, and they're definitely a bit long but work with heels.

alice - Those jeans look fab! High-ish waisted and slim leg, I think they will be very flattering on most figures. You say in your op that they "fit very nicely", so if you feel comfortable in them, and they fit you well, then you'll look great! I'd love a pair of them myself!

7 jeans are definitely long in the leg, but I've had all mine taken up by a good alterations shop, and they always turn out fine.

aliceinlalaland · 07/12/2010 22:28

ah, they are high-waisted aren't they [insert stupid emoticon], just reread the description Blush. I think I thought high-waisted meant something a bit different...

Thanks for the reassurance. I did think they fitted nicely when i first tried them on but now questioning my judgement a bit. Anyway I really must stop obsessing about this and go to bed... thanks again

alice, they look lovely. I want some! Where did you get them from? Are they available to buy in the UK?

paddingtonbear1 · 07/12/2010 23:05

I bought some 'Madonna' ones from TkMaxx for 20 quid, and they are fab, but they are 'Seven' - can someone tell me what the difference is? Is it a totally different brand?

aliceinlalaland · 08/12/2010 10:13

kucking - glad you like Smile I live in London, they stock them at John Lewis in Oxford Street (regular price though, no bargains to be had - will be investigating other suggestions if I decide to reinvest!)

paddington - don't know about Seven I'm afraid. New to this game.

CJCreggnog · 08/12/2010 10:22

I love my seven jeans. Had the same initial resistance, thinking 'what a stupid amount to pay for a pair of jeans', but they are so worth it.

I get them from the Joseph on the King's Road - they almost always have half-price sales, so my last pair were £60. Mind you, I always have to pay an extra tenner to get them taken up.

kuckingfunt · 08/12/2010 13:07

Hi Paddington, yes they are different brands completely. 7 for all makind are usually a lot more than that, even if you are lucky enough to get them in TKMaxx.

Alice - they are on my 'want' list! Have you tried them on yet? Are they quite high waisted? I am not in London but near a big John Lewis shop so I will take a look in there.

aliceinlalaland · 08/12/2010 13:42

kucking - well, I didnt think they were especially high-waisted (when I think of high-waisted I remember a horrid pair of M&S jeans that my Mum bought for me as a teenager - the horror). So yes, I bought them but kept the labels on so I could obsess in the comfort of my own home about whether or not they were a good purchase! So I've tried them on about a million times as it happens. Can post a headless pic that I took of them during my mad decision-making process on my profile if that would help to see them on a real human?!

OP posts:
kuckingfunt · 08/12/2010 15:48

alice - that would be great if you could do that - then I will see where they come up to on your waist.

Think I know what you mean, I have seen the real high waisted trousers and I don't like those, I just dont like the really low waisted ones that show half your bum when you bend down!

kuckingfunt · 08/12/2010 15:49

oh and you will have to make your profile public, I can't see it at the moment Smile

aliceinlalaland · 08/12/2010 18:56

Aha, not delved into the whole issue of profiles before. Will look into it this evening once the DDs are down and post a pic (exposing the 7 waistband!) FWIW I don't think there's any risk of builders bum with that cut

OP posts:
DonaAna · 08/12/2010 19:24

Alice, I'm also interested in the headless body shot :D

Wrestling with the same issues, ie, whether to go for the horrid mum waist or whether I want to freeze my nether parts and flash ugly white flesh every time I bend down to pick something up... I already decided to buy a pair of highwaisted jeans, but got cold feet yesterday - the pair (not 7s) I tried on yesterday made me look about 70.

aliceinlalaland · 08/12/2010 20:55

Righto, DDs asleep, photos uploaded - though I'm now back to doubting my choice having scrutinised the headless shot again! Just not sure the high-waisty thing (now that I've become aware of it) is flattering, though as you say Dona, arsecrack flashing rather unbecoming too.

Anyway, since you're looking, what shoes would you wear those with (bearing in mind the weather)? and if you think the ones I've got on look ok, what socks should I wear to prevent frostbite? Got to drum up an outfit to wear to the office before Friday and have no idea what to pair the jeans with.

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 08/12/2010 21:05

Is Brandalley the only place to buy them for less?
I love my 7FAM jeans but cant justify the full price and there isnt anywhere local which sells them cheaply AFAIK.

Pannacotta · 08/12/2010 21:07

And alice I think your jeans look great, not too high waisted at all...

roary · 08/12/2010 22:02

Alice I have the Kimmie and I am the least Curvy Girl you could imagine. THey are not at all high waisted. You will not be wearing Mom Jeans.

Oooh, I've just seen your headless pic. I do not think they are high waisted on you, either.

DonaAna · 09/12/2010 07:15

Alice, they look really good on your photo. Not at all like the hideous hideous ones I tried the other day. I'm just about ready to order my Kimmies, but before doing that, just one more question: do they really stay up? When you bend down, when you have your mobile in your pocket? I'm so through with low waisted ones that make me look like Kevin Federline's sister.

Not sure about what shoes to recommend, the ones you are wearing look fine to me. I'm in deep show and wear some very utilitarian boots outdoors (have even considered riggers) with woolen socks and cute flats at work. And Uggs at home indoors. Like many others, I'm currently wearing chunky black woolen pantyhose, so that limits my work shoe options somewhat (all toe cleavage showing ballerinas are out).

kuckingfunt · 09/12/2010 08:51

Oh they are lovely Alice - not at all high waisted, just right. Maybe I phrased it incorrectly when I asked if they were high, I meant do they show your arse crack - anything above that is high to me!

They sit just right on your waist, I am going to get some now. As for shooes, the ones you have on look fine, or maybe Uggs or are they not skinny enough to tuck in? Or, what about some shoe boots, they would look good with them.

Thanks for putting the photo up.

carciofi · 09/12/2010 08:54

Alice, you look really good in the jeans.

30andMerkin · 09/12/2010 08:57

They look really fab, and am very envious of your skinny pins!

aliceinlalaland · 09/12/2010 11:52

Aah, thanks ladies - you're all lovely and very confidence boosting.

Dona - Right, I have just put chunky iphone in back pocket and crouched down in Kimmies. Mobile phone stayed firmly in place Smile.

Re shoes, I bought these
www.clarks.co.uk/find/keyword-is-mauritius+chic/product-is-20340837, which l like with skirts/patterned tights and would work fine with skinnies but the Kimmies don't fit into them. They fit nicely into Uggs but not sure that'll be acceptable for the office. So, I"m stuck with the shoes in the picture, what socks ladies? Just plain black woollens? Or black 'pop socks' if such a thing still exists?

And, my final question. What top can I get to go with the kimmies?

(Have a meeting now but afterwards I have a couple of child-free hours to finish sorting out my office wardrobe so if there are any other wardrobe essentials that you'd recommend do let me know)

OP posts:
kuckingfunt · 09/12/2010 13:39

I would just wear plain black socks, or black pop socks - you can still get knee highs. I sometimes wear them for work under trousers - they are the ugliest things ever but do keep you a bit warmer in this weather!

Tops? Hmmm...you could wear anything with those, but I think it would be a shame to wear anything too long and hide all the detail of the bum/pockets of the jeans. How smart/causual is your office? How about some long sleeved plain tops with a nice chunky cardigan over? Or a nice jumper?
