Really warm winter clothes for baby and toddler

Can anyone recommend something not too expensive that really keeps the chill out. I'm looking for a coat for 3 year old boy, plus hat, gloves, socks, maybe even long-john type things (I'm sure they exist under some fancy extreme-sports type name). Also, I'm looking for warm trousers and socks/booties for a crawling but not walking 10 month old.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

jojo maman bebe? M&S sell boys thermals or scour ebay for outer wear though not always cheaper!

H&m pretty good for hats, waterproof gloves/mittens, scarves & they do some decent warm coats for a good price. The best thermal long johns I got were off ebay excellent grey fleece ones still going strong, far better quality than ones I got from camping shops.

I just got dd some fleece trousers from Sainsburys for £3, they go from 6 months I think. I was considering fleece welly socks for her to keep the chill out, she wears some daisy roots leather booties in the house which are great, you can get plenty of copies on ebay for about £7. She's 2, but has been wearing those kind of booties since crawling. Slipper socks from boots/H&M also an option for a baby.

Fantastic - thanks so much for your tips. Any more advice on warm coats for toddlers particularly welcome. Much moaning today in the bitter cold...

Hmm, if you can afford to pay a bit more - Gap warmest coats are fab? They are down filled so mega warm. There is 30% off in store til tomorrow with a link from MN! or if you can't go instore I think you get 15% off when you sign up online

Get tights for the baby under trousers!
Primark had thermal long johns in today too.
Gap do fleece lined jeans and some gorgeous Cody fleece tracksuit pants too

maxybrown · 27/11/2010 18:58

ooh we got tracksuit fleece trousers from Gap the other day, DS managed to get 3 days in a row out of them - amazing! He loves them and I wish I'd bought more. H&M sell tights for boys too!! With cars on - good for layering

dinkystinky · 27/11/2010 19:04

We have a padded M&S coat for DS1 (aged 5) which he loves - not that expensive either and if you layer up with thermal vest, tshirt, long sleeve tshirt and jumper their top half is lovely and toasty. Longjohns and thick socks will help lower half stay warm. FWIW, thick tracksuit bottoms are the warmest trousers we've found - Sainsburys are pretty good generally, as are gap, for them. You could have a look on ebay.

At 10 months I really recommend polartec all in ones (covers their hands, feet and head brilliantly and you can layer up underneath).

The HippyChick all in ones are good.

Hippychick all-in-one

My daughter wore hers all last winter when she was 2 for doing school pick up and drop off (so lots of standing in a cold playground) with my older boy. Second the suggestion of Gap down filled coats if you want a coat rather than all in one. or a Trespass ski jacket.

Ski wear outlets (including TKMaxx) would be good hunting ground for coats and socks.

CH2207 · 28/11/2010 14:31

I recommend Cambridge Baby. Clothes there aren't cheap but because they're all pure wool they are toasty warm and you don't need so many of them.
I also put my toddler in woolen tights in the winter.

CH2207 · 28/11/2010 14:33

I'd also welcome any advice on very warm boots (also comfortable and healthy for feet) for a 23 month old boy toddler.

accessorizequeen · 29/11/2010 22:59

The muddy puddles baby snow boots seem to be well reviewed? Where are you finding woollen tights, I've been looking for some for dd (she's 2) but everything is cotton!

oHeleno · 15/02/2011 13:24

Hi, For warm wool things follow CH2207's tip and head to Cambridge Baby. Wool tights go from 0-3m to 3-4years, along with wool/silk leggings, wool long-johns, wool vests - and it's Merino wool so for most skins it is not itchy.

Also you can ask me about any wool stuff because we have two very woolly children!!

Helen
