Tooth Whitening - preferably in the chair - who's had it?

I have had a little look at some old threads and gleaned some info already. And sorry if its been done more recently (dont think so)...but am very interested to hear from anyone who has had in-chair whitening, particularly Zoom, or anything else for that matter.

Also very interested to hear from any dentists who have any "inside info" on the various procedures...

Zoom seems to be the popular one in my area, at my clinic, and at the clinic where I get errr a different um cosmetic errr procedure done ahem (tries to frown conspiricilly but can't)

Don't want to do anything "at home" or at night, as I wont do it. Just want to go to a clinic and have them "do it to me". So to speak.

Anyone had it a few years ago? How are things now? Anyone wish they hadn't had it done? Anyone swear by it?

I had Zoom March 09 and was very pleased, will prob get it redone March 11.

Online you read of aftershock pains, I got one and still remember it now, very peculiar but only lasted a second.

Having it done was not as uncomfortable as I'd anticipated. My teeth did not come up Hollywood white, but definitely whiter. My teeth weren't a bad colour to start, so maybe if my teeth had been more yellow the difference would have been more dramatic, IYSWIM?

That's interesting < pushes OP aside >; I did the trays thing a few years ago but could never achieve more than three days running as the pain got so bad.

I'd really like to whiten them but am scared with Zoom the pain might be even worse as I couldn't control it by stopping the process iyswim.

My dentist did say he recommended a mouthwash (can't remember which one) to help with this.

I have done the trays back before zoom was around & I did Zoo a couple of years ago too. TBH I think the pain was worse with trays as it goes on for weeks. Results were about the same.

Sorry if you already know but I always use sensodyne toothpaste but rub it directly into teeth as much as is necessary after treatment & it really helps.

Am amazed at how some places seem to be offering zoom type treatments at a much lower price than my dentist, don't know if some are better than others?

I did zoom a couple of years ago, it was bloody agony, never again! I think people have different tolerance to it though. They did come up very white but I couldn't help myself and both smoked and drank red wine in the following days so they didn't stay quite so brilliant for long, but I still think they're better than they were before

Thanks for this ladies! Yes, the reason why I want to go in-chair is that if its painful/uncomfy or interferes with a restful night's sleep, or you have to find time to do it in the day, I just wont do it, I know what I'm like, and it will be a waste of money. Whereas an hour in the chair, and its done...

I think I'll shop around for a good price and try the Zoom next time I need a pick-me-up. I keep hoping a voucher for it will come up on Groupon.com ...I keep seeing vouchers for in-clinic teeth whitening but not yet for the Zoom procedure.

groupon do occasional teeth whitening offers. My friend had it done a couple of weeks ago and paid a fraction of the price compared to what I was conned out of paid

Oops, sorry, didn't read your last post properly, maybe my friend had a different procedure than zoom.

Crest whitestrips didn't work on me .

I think I did have those, but my teeth came through yellow rather than gradually turning that way iyswim, so I think the darker colour goes all the way through, not just on the surface.

The trays did lighten them a bit, but only enough to make them just about presentable.

I'd love to see myself with proper white teeth, just not convinced anything will actually work.

So, are you not allowed to have coffee or red win ever again after Zoom? Sounds grim if so.

Does the no coffee rul apply to all teeth whitening?
If so I will have to re-think my plans...

I saw the demonstrations at the British dental association's conference and whilst I am not a dentist myself I listened with interest to the dentists questions (and the answers) and am sticking to the whitening toothpaste myself.
They open the tubals to allow the product to penetrate which will weaken the dentine I believe.

That's what scares me, MTM - not having been blessed with strong teeth in the first place (no antibiotics, just came through dark - and give the myth to the theory about yellow teeth indicating strong enamel).

I've been using the toothpaste for years (have also tried the £8+ a tube type), with no discernible results.

So, the choice is, try Zoom which will probably help but might weaken the teeth further, or do nothing and carry on feeling rubbish. Hmm...

WWWY - is there a link between antibiotics and dodgy teeth then?

Well, someone else mentioned it here, not me. But I have heard a theory about anti-bs being taken when young sometimes causing discolouration. Not sure if it's true.

There's also one about suffering an extremely high temperature around 3 months of age damaging the enamel. A dentist told this to a friend of mine whose eldest had exactly that, and she could pinpoint the exact time of the virus.
