Empire Line Coats

I am looking for a new coat, I'm 5'2 small build, high waisted (also known as short backed). I like the idea of a shortish empire line coat like this but don't like the belt and don't want grey,

or this - I like the colour, but not the netting - what's that about?

Can I get away with this style (I am middle aged {if I live to 100}, and don't want to look completely mutton)

Good idea?/rubbish idea?/ other suggestions all welcome

Thank you tethers, love the first one - warm colours better on me than greys, and actually the checked one is very nice too, hadn't considered a check. Can't get your 'blow the budget' link to work though.
