Spanx. Or M&S shapewear. Depends how long the dress is, but I go for the high waisted ones (up to just underneath the bust).

cruelladepoppins · 04/11/2010 18:56

I mean, depends how long the dress is whether you go for "legs" on it or not. Gives you a smoother bum and no VPL. But can be awful if it shows under a short skirt when you cross your legs.

cornsilkpyrotechnicqueen · 04/11/2010 18:58

I ordered one of those spanx slip things from qvc last night.

traceybath · 04/11/2010 19:42

I have a spanx slip, spanx pants things - from waist to mid-thigh and a m&S tummmy control camisole Blush

All very good - particularly the last two worn at the same time. Word of advice pull the m&s camisole on from the bottom up - so step into it. Do not put on over your head or you end up with boobs[ squashed and arms trapped Blush

I find the spanx slip does good smoothing but the knicker things do more serious control.

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 04/11/2010 19:57

dress is knee length.

I have a pair of the spanx shorts but they seem to roll up from the bottom of the leg which is less than attractive.

i think i need the knickers with the waist that comes right up to your boobs

Whatever you do, don't get the Primark ones. They are useless. M&S were good.

Try it out beforehand though, cause they give me tummyache. Had miserable time at party because of it.

brimfull · 04/11/2010 20:04

i have a gok divine outline dahlink and it's fab

traceybath · 04/11/2010 20:05

I found with the shorts ones if I carefully put my tights on top then they stayed in place well.

And with the m&s shapewear pulled down - well the effect with a dress on was fab but not so attractive without Wink

brimfull · 04/11/2010 20:07

mine stays in place and is very comfy
wear with your own bra

cruelladepoppins · 04/11/2010 20:14

Agree about effect without clothes - I have never allowed my DP to see me in my Spanx!!

Bought this set which just arrived today ... much more attractive! Smile

Can't report on efficacy under a dress just yet ...

traceybath · 04/11/2010 20:37

Oh and please - you are stylish and beautiful!

cornsilkpyrotechnicqueen · 04/11/2010 20:39

now I'm obsessing over that Gok Wan thing

Bousy · 04/11/2010 20:42

I love the photo on the Gok thing. It appears they've already gone to the party (he is holding a drink), and she has unfortunately forgotten to put her dress on top.

geordieminx · 04/11/2010 20:44

How do you stop them rolling up if you don't wear tights though?

southeastastra · 04/11/2010 20:45

i have one of those waist tube things, then if they get too uncomforable you can just move them lower or higher

fitflopqueen · 04/11/2010 20:53

how about this i got a control slip from m&s similar to this, bugger to get into but very controlling. Grin

CitrusZest · 04/11/2010 21:34

I use the firm control M&S shapewear that is like big pants that end at your bra. But, the £6 ones from Sainsburys are fabulous. I wear them every day. The do roll down sometimes but if you tuck them under your bra it stays put...but I am a short-arse so this might not work on a taller person.

TattyDevine · 04/11/2010 22:02

I have tried them all, believe me, and this is the one I recommend the most

Fleexees by Maidenform Ultimate Slimmer Bodybriefer

The ones that come up under the bra can roll down, flubbing out a cheeky roll of fat at the most inopportune times. This does not allow it because it has shoulder straps, but is better than a "swimsuit" style all in one because you can wear your own bra. It doesn't have "legs", but they do have a version with legs if you think you need it. Think about the logistics of peeing if you get one with legs though. They have a crotch split, but I tried to wee in one once and my brain didn't like it and I got stage fright and nothing happened. My brain just kept saying, "your pants are still on" and wouldn't let the wee flow Blush - yet you'd have to take your dress off to get the straps back down over your shoulders! Grin

It gives amazing control, a really sleek smooth line and is surprisingly comfortable, and you dont have to worry about it shifting in any way like some solutions.

The only thing I would warn you with - a lot of these shaper things give you problems with tights if you are wearing tights as well. They are a slippy, shiny type material a lot of the time (Spanx and The Body Wrap not so much but most the other brands are) and your tights can sometimes fall down your waist because they have nothing to "grip" to. So to ensure that isn't a problem, I buy the "suspender tights" - these bad boys - not sure why they dont slip down come to think of it but they just dont!

It will solve your problem though if the dress basically fits. It will give you a smooth line and a good shape, they take 10 pounds off they really do (visually I mean)

brimfull · 05/11/2010 08:55

I have tried flexees one and found the gok wan one much more comfortable.

Smile
QueenGigantaurofMnet · 05/11/2010 14:34

I have ordered a gok WAN dress thingy one. I liked the fact I can wear my own bra as I have great difficulty getting bras I like. Not sure one connected to a body suit would fit or feel right.
I will let you know when it arrives.

geordieminx · 05/11/2010 19:39

Ooooh tatty, you've sold that to me. What's the sizing like?

honie · 05/11/2010 20:03

I use an inches off, its a boned cincher, you can wear your own bra & knickers and it doesn't roll down as its boned. Figleaves stock them, and have a review section.

biological · 05/11/2010 22:46

All previous magic knickers have just rolled down over my doughy stomach folds.

Have invested in one of these & it smooth things out acceptably (but doesn't take 20 yrs off your figure i'm afraid) . I'm actually quite pleased with it.

Beware returns policy - but I found M&S underwear sizing the same

doozle · 05/11/2010 22:49

I second the Flexees, doesn't roll up anywhere.
