Coat/jacket over long cardigan?

I'm loving wearing long cardigans over tops and jeans lately but what do you wear on top? I have one long-ish coat but I only really wear it when it's freezing - the rest of the time I wear a shorter jacket.

Is it a fashion faux pas to wear a jacket with a long cardy underneath?

Yes I think it would look odd. Maybe put a warm scarf on and go coatless (thermals underneath!) until it is cold enough for coat.
