Reporting back on Boden cable knit coat and other winter preview items

A few of you asked me to let you know what Boden's cosy cable coat was like..... so.....

It arrived today but is going back. It is lovely quality (for a change), really soft, and smart for a cardie, but doesn't suit me. Oh and it is warm (the knit is quite thick). However I'm 5ft1 with big norks and generally long cardigans don't work for me as I tend to look a bit housecoat-ish and frumpy (certainly when buttoned up). But if you are taller I think it could be worth a try.

Also going back is the velvet ribbon skirt - again, the quality felt good (I wonder if Johnnie has listened to the masses of complaints about the cheap feel of the summer/autumn stuff?) and I also kept it but was too A-line for me.

But the denim pencil skirt is brilliant, a perfect sexy pencil shape and great colour. Makes my legs look fab. So I've ordered it in black velvet too.

I like the look of the ribbon skirt. What colour did you get it in? I can't decide whether to get the black or petrol.

woopsidaisy · 08/10/2010 09:50

I have kept the denim pencil skirt, and the fun wool mini in aqua. They both fit well, show off my legs and will get plenty of wear. Sent back the Biker Boots too,a little too "wellyish" for me.

Its the same stuff year in, year out, isnt it? Ive got the exact same pencil skirt from 2 years ago. Im not impressed by any of it, more so as Ive been in actual shops recently. Im really off Boden these days, as you can tell!!

I ordered a couple of pairs of the boots - both were huge on the calves. and i don't have particularly skinny calves.

I have kept the boyfriend jeans.

Pollyanna · 08/10/2010 10:35

I sent back the boyfriend blazer too. Too boxy and mannish.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/10/2010 10:41

[lurk] So, a 5'3" size 16/18 er won't suit the cable coat? :( Anyone get the zip up hoodie thingy? I meant to get it but kept spending -the money-- forgetting - is it very bulky?

OooohWhatIfItHurts · 08/10/2010 11:03

I got the velvet ribbon skirt in the black. If it had had the same pencil cut as the denim skirt I would have kept it in a heartbeat.

asecretlemonadedrinker I fear that the cable coat wouldn't be for you either. If only we could grow another 6 inches or so, eh.

Ooh I just clicked on you link. I ordered and sent back the cable coat. I am size 12 and 5'9. But it still looked really frumpy (actually alot of Boden stuff looks frumpy on me). I think you need to be a size 8 to wear it. or it could just be inherently frumpy.

Pollyanna · 08/10/2010 11:20

or it could be me that that's inherently frumpy

moragbellingham · 08/10/2010 14:39

ASLM Do you mean the toasty zip through?

I got last years (in the sale for £30) and it is fairly bulky as the lining is a thick and knobbly(?) fleece.
However, it has been my best ever Boden purchase because it is so lovely and warm.

FranSanDisco · 08/10/2010 15:14

I have just received the Boiled Wool Coat in Black. Thinner than I thought it would be but looks better on than I thought it would. I will ask opinions of dd and ds and dh tonight, then disregard them all and decide if I'm keeping it tomorrow Grin.

employmentlawquery · 08/10/2010 20:32

I got the pencil skirt in smoke and black velvet delivered today. Lovely!

loobylu3 · 09/10/2010 11:44

My best buy from Boden (actually the only thing I am keeping)! has been the hooded sweated shirt in the JohnnieB range. It is gorgeous, warm and comfortable with a furry lining!

orangina · 09/10/2010 11:47

I got the artisan cardigan yesterday and love it. Which is quite something, as I normally send back EVERYTHING I order for myself from Boden and then swear never to order again. But it is lovely, good quality, toasty warm and I DON'T feel mumsy in it.

Am thinking about the boiled wool coat now....

nicolamumof3 · 09/10/2010 15:01

my toasty zip through went back huge and totally unflattering. weird shape. as did the padded coat that was revolting..didn't even try it on!! i fear boden is best for the ds's now.

kittya · 09/10/2010 17:42

Just boiled wool makes me think of sheep being thrown into a cooking pot!!

agree, its best for the children.

Are they still doing the spend £30 get a tenner off or, have they clocked onto that?
