I am seriously considering a perm - am I an idiot?

I had permed hair from 16-24 - and my hair used to be naturally wavy, so much so that I could leave mousse in it and then put my fingers through when it dried and had lovely natural waves - managed that til about 30.

Fast forward 10 years and my hair is now not wavy enough to leave to dry naturally - all sorts of weird straight bits so I now have to dry it straight with a flick every day.

It's also thin and v. boring and shoulder length.

My options are a perm or to cut it shorter with more layers to give it more body.

I have been out to parties 4 times in the last 2 weeks and have noticed that after 5 minutes of dancing my hair looks really crap - cowlicky at the front, frizzy from the humidity. Really made me look messy very early on.

Should I get a perm or would it just look like I hadn't changed my hair since I was a student? Confused
