I was hoping to wear leggings, tunics and boots, but...arrrrrrrrrrrgh!

it looks as if I am mutton as lamb- leggings look like tights and tunics look like a dress that is 6 inches above knee.

Looks fine with ballet flats when you can see they are not tights- but bang goes my winter wardrobe. Especially bad as both winter coats are almost 3/4 length- so the whole thing looks like I am wearing a mini dress and mini coat. Not good at my age.

T o add to the problem, my Uniqlo skinny tapered jeans are all bunching up in my new DUO boots and look Norah Batty. They look skinny when they hang loose, IYSWIM, but not when tucked into boots.

Help!

thicker leggings?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 04/10/2010 12:31

Boot cut jeans and heels...Smile (I am old,, and wore leggings last time round and have the rule that if I wore a fashion first time round I am too old for it second...

letsblowthistacostand · 04/10/2010 12:41

get a pair of converse to get you through the transitional period? otherwise thicker/one size up leggins.

CMOTdibbler · 04/10/2010 12:44

Yes, thicker leggings, or jeggings (the sort that are uber stretchy skinnies rather than denim look jersey) are what you want.

Long socks for your skinnies, and some converse too

BridesheadRegardless · 04/10/2010 12:59

Jodpurs.

Gives you a legging look but nice thick strechy fabric and proper trouser feel.

I got some lovely soft ones from M and S Auotgraph range

purplepeony · 04/10/2010 13:01

okay- it's thicker leggings- so where do I get?

I did do leggings first time round BUT it was a different look then- I wore them with just past the bum tops and Ts-now the tops are tunics, not long sweaters.
I have ditched bootcut jeans and heels as I think they look dated.

Can I recommend these jeggings in indigo as being invaluable, since February this year, and give a lovely streamlined, non Norah Batty look in boots.

vintage4 · 04/10/2010 13:26

i just cant get into leggings either much as i want to. I am 47 .Was watching old episode of Frazier from the 90s and Daphne was wearing them and i just thought no i`m not going down that road again much nicer things around that suit me

gibba8 · 04/10/2010 13:37

I am 43, tall and have your exact problem. I also look like I am wearing a short dress with tights. I also wanted it to work so much because I see ladies at work much older than me wearing this style but unfortunatly it just does not suit me. Back to jeans and trainers then!!!!

purplepeony · 04/10/2010 13:59

Maybe i will simply have to wear the tunics and leggings indoors or on occasions when I don't need boots?

My Uniqlo skinnies are called "tapered" which means that the last 12 inches or so are skinnier than the rest but the thighs are not skin tight. So when the boots are on, the thighs look a bit baggy.

My DD has the skinny/bootslook to a T but her jeans look as if they have been sprayed on and I am simply too old for that.

purplepeony · 04/10/2010 15:22

I have got Boden leggings in black Smile And wear with the empire line tunic in grey/black- still looks like a mini dress and opaques.

What length is the perfect tunic? Mine are like Purple's and finish around 6" above the knee. I've one which is shorter but it only just covers my bum when i bend over - looks fine if the leggings are nice and thick - if they weren't, then it wouldn't be a good look!

florenceuk · 04/10/2010 16:37

I wonder if a kind of narrow tapered trouser with a shoe boot would work (ie, not tucking in your boots, but having something that sits neatly under the trouser) would work - or a Chelsea boot or brogue. Toast have a fitted mid-heel shoeboot on their site. Or try a mid-calf slightly wider biker boot style?

vesela · 04/10/2010 17:41

I think it's a case of not going for tunics/dresses that are too short - go for two or three inches above the knee. That way you don't need to worry about whether the leggings are super-thick. You can still wear the shorter tunics with jeans.

vesela · 04/10/2010 18:45

also, my leggings are quite thick but I wear them interchangeably with thick tights, i.e. if I wouldn't wear thick tights with a particular tunic/dress, then I wouldn't wear leggings with it either, if you see what I mean.
