Rucksacks

I don't have one, they are deeply unstylish

However, I cycle to a teaching session once a week now, and need to take my purse, keys and some A4 papers with me. I have a basket (much more stylish) on the bike, but when I cycle over bumps it all flies in the air.
Plus I will need to fit some lights on the thing when it gets a little darker and will have to take off the basket then.

Plus, I have started a walking club and need a bag for the day to carry waterproofs and lunch in, we are planning to walk up Snowdon next year so it does need to have function as well as style.

Now, is it possible?
Does such a thing exist?
Any suggestions gratefully received
And I have heard about some packs with have a bladder for water in with a straw, can I combine this??

LTEC, it's the age old dilemma of Style V function.

I suspect I am going to have to give in and go for function.

I also need clips for my wide-legged or else I get tangled up in the chain.

Darrell - you are thinking of a camelbak, in terms of a bladder. Thats the 'branded' product and the most expensive. I would look for just the 'bladder' which can be put in any rucksak and the straw threaded out and over your shoulder. Try searching under 'running/walking hydration'.

In terms of rucksacs - not much help tbh. I suspect you need to go for practicality. Although I LOVE a bit of S & B, when it comes to this sort of thing, I feel you just have to go with the most practical.

I use a snake bracelet for my bike clip - only one needed, unless the trousers are incredibly wide - it is great, does the job well and is a fashion accessory as well!

If it wasn't for climbing Snowdon I would suggest a messenger bag - since you need a rucksack I would get a good one fit for the job.

I cycle to work and find that backpacks give me a sweaty back. Extremely not S&B!!

I have a handlebar bag from decathlon which fits my purse/keys/phone/access swipes and a top (keep trousers and shoes at work as I cycle in lycra) This still allows room for my cycle computer/bell/lights on the handlebars and is waterproof/zips up

As winter sets in I need more space to carry boots/waterproof/diary etc so I've ordered a bag to fit on my pannier rack.

All very dull indeed but oh so practical.

Now a handlebar bag sounds good, and was thinking about a pannier, I had seen some lovely Dutch panniers

this Vaude one might be worth a punt. It doubles as a rucksack as well as attaching onto a rack, my bag is Vaude and they are excellent quality.

Decathlon are great for handlebar bags, I think mine was under £10 and has kept things dry in downpours for 8+ miles.

Eastpak ones come in nice designs so might be good for everyday. I have a shoulder bag to carry camera equipment and it's very very durable, and waterproof.

Yes, yes, yes, re. cycling with rucksack = sweaty back.

I use one of these and wear it as a rucksack - very not suitable for outdoorsy type things though. Rucksacks are designed to cling closely to your back and leaning slightly forward on the bike emphasizes this.
