Dressing like our mothers did?

What I am curious about is these so called maxi skirts. Obviously they've been given a modern make-over but photographic evidence shows that my mother and many others were wearing long skirts back in the late 80s.

They look so comfortable and easy to wear though.

What do you think? A fashion 'do' or 'don't'?

I like maxi skirts/dresses in the summer but I'm not sure about the winter. I don't know what shoes to wear with them and also don't like the idea of a soggy hem. I think also that they look nice in the summer because you have bare arms and sandals on, but in the winter you would just look so covered up IYSWIM.
I have photos of my mum over the years in every skirt length available from maxi hippy skirts to 60's minis so I guess they have seen pretty much every fashion in their lives!
