I will just look like a nun in this, won't I?

It's this dress from Toast:

www.toast.co.uk/product/dresses+and+tunics/C1AC4/Fine+Wool+Maxi+Dress.htm?categoryref=%2fcategory.aspx%3fcategoryid%3ddresses%2520and%2520tunics%26seoterm%3ddresses%2520and%2520tunics%26&pcat=dresses+and+tunics&adimage=

I was looking through Ghoul's comfortable day dress thread and also want something jersey-ish and simple. I love this dress and really like maxi-length, but I can't help suspecting I will look a bit like a nun. I'm 25 and 5'4, usually wear heels though, don't usually shop in Toast! Has anyone tried it on in the shop, and is it nice on, or a bit conventual?

Yes you will I'm afraid. Or on your way to a funeral.

Sorry

rubyslippers · 12/09/2010 20:34

Looks incredibly frumpy

Sorry

Hassled · 12/09/2010 20:38

If it were anything other than black it would be lovely. I like the cut, etc. But yes, definately a touch of the Maria Von Trapp there.

Don't be sorry - I did know but the temptation of something warm and cosy that meant I didn't have to think about tights was quite huge. Blush I sometimes commute very early in the morning and would really love it if it were appropriate to wear a dressing gown. I've got a gorgeous full-length black velvet coat to tuck around me when it's really cold, but too wintery yet.

Ah well ... I'll just have to man up!

Real nuns wear M&S.

BeenBeta · 12/09/2010 20:43

Could you maybe carry a broomstick and wear a pointy hat to vary the look a bit? Grin

JaneS · 12/09/2010 20:43

Grin Oddly enough, my cousin was a nun. She wore a very proper and traditional Anglican habit, but she did say it was always odd shopping for underwear - apparently the young men in John Lewis found it most embarrassing and she wondered if there were a public preconception that nuns didn't wear knickers.

Thanks Beta .... ok, ok, I will now hang my head and never darken the style section again ...

Sad

I like it.

Sister Wendy very on trend for AW11.

dinkystinky · 12/09/2010 20:45

Yup -= you'll look like an extra from the nun scenes in sound of music Grin

JaneS · 12/09/2010 20:46

You're all being mean now.

tethersend · 12/09/2010 20:47

I really do like it!

BelligerentGhoul · 12/09/2010 20:48

I think tbh it would depend how it was worn. Maybe with boots and a grey leather biker jacket? All the mags would say an aviator jacket but tbh I think they look a bit daft.

moondog · 12/09/2010 20:48

Jesus, that is criminal.

bigstripeytiger · 12/09/2010 20:49

I really like it, could you order it and return if it didnt look good?

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2010 20:49

My mother would approve.

Timbachick · 12/09/2010 20:49

I thought it was lovely until I read that it was a maxi...think it really would be a little nun-like.

TrillianAstra · 12/09/2010 20:51

Less frumpy?

More vampy?

JaneS · 12/09/2010 20:56

No, tethers, I don't think I can now! I'd be thinking of you lot every time I wore it - and not in a good way.

I think I'm over-compensating - I've got a gorgeous black knit dress that I wear a lot, but I made the mistake of wearing it in front of my students and realized that:

a) my boobs aren't really a D cup any more and
b) they do bounce quite a lot when you've had to loosen your bra straps in order to keep said bra out of sight.

Hence the foray into nunnishness.

garciasangria · 12/09/2010 20:57

Have you seen this jersey maxi dress from topshop...dark grey marl, and straighter skirt, so not as nun-like, and ££££ cheaper!

JaneS · 12/09/2010 20:57

Ooh, trillian, I like the second dress ... but I am thinking I may need to go and explore colour for a while to get the witch-images out of my head!

KurriKurri · 12/09/2010 21:00

I thought it was very nun-like when I first looked, but looking at the pictures of models wearing it, it looks much better on. I think it could look very stylish with the right accessories. (not on me I hasten to add - I would definitely look like sister Wendy)

garciasangria · 12/09/2010 21:00

Lol at loosening bra straps! Maybe wear a cami or contrasting vest top under?

JaneS · 12/09/2010 21:04

garcia - not so keen on the topshop one. That waistline doesn't really work for me (tummy). I don't normally go around flashing my boobs at students btw, just forgot to wear the right bra that day.

kurri, thanks, but I think it's a lost cause now! Grin

Yes before you enlarge the picture the model in the second picture looks like a nun.
