Are there any perfumes that smell like or are based on bergamot?

I've just rediscovered my love of the fragrance of bergamot after finally getting round to buying another bottle of the essential oil. I'm currently burning some so the room smells divine.

Are there any perfumes out there that are inspired by bergamot or are based on it? Its just such a balanced smell - not too citrus , not too floral, not too spicy - that I'd love to find a perfume like it.

Thanks

Bergamot is a very popular base for perfumes. Go for woody scents.

Vetyver by Jo Malone is a good one.

NomDePlume · 04/09/2010 22:18

This is a pure base note of bergamot from a tree-hugging company....

NorbertDentressangle · 04/09/2010 22:29

Thanks NDP.

Am I right in thinking though that our nearest Jo Malone stockist is Selfridges in Birmingham?

I'm reluctant to buy it online as TBH last time I was in Selfridges I tried a couple of JM perfumes that I thought I would like (partly based on recommendations on here I expect) and found I really didn't like them Hmm.

The tree hugging one might be a better bet if 'buying blind' so to speak

lol at 'a warm lick of marmalade' on the second one.

Is it me or does the packaging on those look a bit old lady-esque?

NorbertDentressangle · 04/09/2010 22:44

Yeah, i think so re stockists.

The packaging on Penhaligons is v trad but the perfume is excellent quality.

Blue Grass by Elizabeth Arden (less £££ and more readily avail to try on the High St) is also a bergamotty one. As are Opium by YSL and Angel by Tierry Mugler (too sweet for me though).

apple99 · 04/09/2010 22:44

Jo Malone has a newish scent called Oud & Bergamot. It is quite strong but also uplifting smell. If you ring your nearist stockist they can send you a tester in the post.

NorbertDentressangle · 04/09/2010 22:48

NDP -I used to wear Opium about 20 years ago!! God, looking back it was so strong and sickly smelling. I even bought a fake bottle from a street trader in Turkey which was even worse! TBH I didn't think you could still buy it.

apple99 -now that sounds interesting. I'll give that a go tomorrow. Thank you.

I know, I remember opium being disgusting too.

JaneS · 04/09/2010 23:05

Mmm, I love bergamot. I guess you may know this as you've been burning the oil, but Boots essential oils last quite a while on the skin.

DilysPrice · 04/09/2010 23:06

Morgane Le Fay is very bergamot-ty,and well worth a try but the only place I know that stocked it was Liberty.

JaneS · 04/09/2010 23:06

Selfridges (I think there's one in Birmingham?) stock Boudicea, which has one or two bergamot-y ones.

tulpe · 05/09/2010 02:12

Some lovely sounding perfumes recommended here.

I love bergamot too. However, you mustn't apply bergamot oil direct to the skin. One of the chemical constituents of the oil is FCF which increases the photosensitivity of the skin by a huge amount making you susceptible to sun burn and damage. In fact, with the exception of lavender (angustifolia not stoechas), sandalwood (one drop to each side of the neck when suffering a throat infection is very soothing) and tea tree (and then only on adult skin), you shouldn't apply any oil neatly to the skin unless directed to by a qualified aromatherapist. Furthermore, the oils you buy in Boots are not going to be therapeutic grade oils. Better to go to a supplier such as Essentially Oils or Neals Yard Remedies.

NorbertDentressangle · 05/09/2010 08:02

Thanks for the further recommendations.

Tulpe -re: photo sensitivity, I was already aware of that with the essential oils but do you think it would still be a problem with the
Single Note one as they say its just alcohol and bergamot oil?

The one I've bought for burning etc was from a specialist place in Totnes so is therapeutic grade.

tulpe, you mix it with base oil - the ones in Boots come with base oil, so I'm pretty sure they are designed to be mixed in!

TigerseyeMum · 05/09/2010 19:28

L'Occitane's Verbena range and their perfume Neroli are not bergamot based but they are similar. I also love bergamot and I like these scents.

Sanesometimes1 · 05/09/2010 23:48

EasterEggHuntIsOver · 06/09/2010 09:58

Hello lovely people.

I'm trying to make a Jo Malone perfume. I have the carrier oil, but does anyone have a pefume recipe, with the essential oils that I need to buy.

Thank you
