Eye makeup for blue eyes

PinkyBurgerhead · 26/08/2010 18:13

I've always been a bit rubbish with eyeshadow because I can't work out what goes with my blue eyes. I'd love to get all smoky and seductive looking, but brown? With blue?

Help!

I think greys/purples/black or dark grey eyeliner would work best rather than browns. I have blue eyes and whilst I love some of the browny shades you get, whenever I try them on I always look like I've had the most awful night's sleep ever! Absolutely love purples and violets, but for a "smoky" look you would need quite dark purples. You could always ask at a makeup counter for suggestions - they may even "do" your eyes for you (def try the Body Shop, they seem keen to get people on the "chair"!)

I bought a l'oreal eyeshadow set of 3 colours, it's labelled for blue eyes and allegedly created by milla jovovic. It even tells you how to apply it! It looks lovely and I probably wouldn't have bought it had it not said blue eyes on it.

cyb · 26/08/2010 18:22

NO NO NO wear brown, or even better a dark camel colour, it will make your blue eyes really stand out.

greys purples etc can look bruise like on blue eyes

LadyBiscuit · 26/08/2010 18:22

Brown makes blue eyes look much bluer. I use browns/purples and sometimes olive green

PinkyBurgerhead · 26/08/2010 18:22

jetgirl please would you point it out if it's one of these

Purple makes me look older. I usually go for a bit of white to look fresh of face, but it's not great in the evening.

I have the 8th one down. It's smoky and seductive!

Maryqueenofchocs · 26/08/2010 18:36

I've got blue eyes, and I wear a MAC navy eyeliner everyday on the top, and when I go out I go heavy on the the blue inside and out the lid- always looked great.

Also agree with cyb with browns and camels, makes the blue jump out..Wink

NotFromConcentrate · 26/08/2010 19:36

I wear either greys or smokey plums/blues on my blue eyes (blue eyeshadow sounds so 80's, I know, but the girl on the YSL counter applied it for me before I bought it and it looks realy dark and smokey and just a little bit sultry Wink)

I'd definitely suggest a visit to House of Fraser or Debenhams, and get one of the girls on the counters ot give you a but of a lesson :)

Happy shopping!

I'm with Cyb, browns and camels are the best for day time. I sometimes use a coloured liner to pop the colour a bit - grey or olive.

Grey is okay for night-time when you can slather it on. I like the navy liner, must try that.

Best tip I ever had from a famous makeup person is to not put anything on your lower lid or lashes. This opens up my eye and also stops any make-up adding to the shadows, of which I have enough already.

Jewelsandgems · 26/08/2010 19:45

I use greys. I find that grey next to my blue eyes makes them look bluer. Not as blue as with browns, but browns make me look knackered! My current greys are all dark, and give me a good blueness and also make me look nice, fresh and 'awake'.

traceybath · 26/08/2010 19:46

Browns definitely - particularly bronzey colours.

I've got a lovely taupe bourjois one or a mac bronzey one for going out.

PaulineCampbellJones · 26/08/2010 21:47

The best stuff I have found to make blue eyes pop is deep burgundy and plum. Sounds ming but looks lovely. YSL mascara in number 5. Mac fineliner in ultraviolet, eyeliner in permaplum. Eyeshadow in quarry .

For daytime, I love soft gold/bronze colours. Have blue eyes and am currently wearing for daytime a nice Barbara Daly shadow - lovely golden corn sort of colour. Very subtle but makes my eyes look lovely. Agree about dark purple eyeliner - have a nice Mac pencil which is good and have also used a gorgeous Dior one. For evening, pinks, purples, and plums and you can wear brown but it does very much depend on the shade, ditto for blue, and also your skin tone - hard to suggest without seeing the colours. Have always found staff in the Mac shop to be incredibly helpful with colour/application advice and also staff on Lancome/Dior and Chanel counters - usually quite happy to do you a mini makeover. Very helpful for tips and techniques. Went with my MIL the other day to John Lewis and she had a lovely session on the Benefit counter - she came away looking fab, about ten years younger. Would heartily recommend.

Black eyeliner and dark grey eyeliner like Amy Lee from Evanescence :)
Or is that just me...

moragbellingham · 27/08/2010 09:15

I saw these Duwop eyecatchers the other day and am quite intrigued. Would have to see them in RL I think.

When I get bored of browns (I have blue eyes)I go for purple.
I use a nice dark purpley black eyeliner MAC Prunella with MAC Shale eyeshadow or Urban Decay 24/7 Rockstar and Elizabeth Arden Smoke eyeshadow.

I don't think smokey eyes in shades of brown look quite right.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 27/08/2010 10:07

They say use warm browns to make blue eyes bluer. I mostly have MAC shadows, my favs are
Sable: lovely warm bronzy-brown, and makes my grey/blue eyes look really blue.
Grain: just a nice warm nude colour with very elegant shimmer very pretty for day.
Twinks: deep plummy brown, use it to deepen crease/outer v
Patina: cool-toned bronzy colour

Mac have a golden liner called Powerpoint thats gorg, and a dark brown called Coffee. I often put cofee on top lid and powerpoint on the lower, looks nice and not harsh for day.

The plum thing can be hard to carry off I find, can make me look like I've been socked in the eye/crying all night. The best plum liner I found (after much trying) is Urban Decays 24/7 liner in Rockstar, nicest shadow is MACs Shale.

Brown eyeshadow is so boring though. And if you have olive/yellowish skin like me, it makes you look like a cold pancake with two bright blue marbles in the middle.

Purples/violets much better, also greys in various shades. I like a nice light peachy gold for daytime. Anything but brown.

PinkyBurgerhead · 27/08/2010 10:11

Thanks so much everyone! Off to check out the makeup counter. I am quite fair skinned, so do find lots of colour to make me look a bit wrong, wish me luck!
