Long hair over 35 - still acceptable?

I was wondering what people think...is it a bit dodgy to keep long hair when you are, as it were, knocking on a bit?

I've recently decided that no it isn't, depending on how you do it. My plan is to wear it loose and scruffy until my face gets too old, then tie it up at the back until I am a granny.

I know there are others among us - shall we have a roll call? I'm interested to know how you feel about having long hair at our age, and how you style it.

Also are there any famous role models anyone can think of - I can't, offhand - most seem to lop it off!

Shoulder length, age 36. Wear it up most of the time, let it down to go out. Always get compliments when it's down, so must still look ok.

mookle · 21/08/2010 20:33

lots of women who I can think of over the age of 35 with long hair who look good. Elle Mcpherson, Liz Hurley, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox. In real life too lots of people I know over 35 with long hair and it looks great! I have just turned 35 and will be keeping my hair long for the forseeable future. As FromGirders - get lots of compliments when Mines down so wont be lopping any time soon!

Flighttattendant · 21/08/2010 20:34

Oh you sound very groomed! Mine is down all the time as I am lazy..Blush

Do you get it cut regularly? I always wonder if it is worth doing this but have not been for three years. The ends are not pretty Grin

am 36 too btw.

Good point about Jennifer etc etc

I had forgotten about them.

i'm 37 and have always had long hair, it's now back bra strap length... have no intention of cutting it anytime soon!

Ewe · 21/08/2010 20:36

Orla Brady is almost 50 and she is beautiful and has long hair. I think it can work, on some people, just need to work out if you're one of them.

iwilldothis · 21/08/2010 20:36

Definitely... feminine and sexy...can create so many different looks with long hair in different styles. You're far more restricted with short hair.

CatIsSleepy · 21/08/2010 20:38

I have long hair, mainly because I hate having haircuts

I generally wear it up as it is too thick and unmanageable to wear down really...well not without lots of work and i don't have time really. And it would get in the way at worl. Would love one of those brazilian blow dry thingies though....

CatIsSleepy · 21/08/2010 20:38

am 39 btw

lifeissweet · 21/08/2010 20:39

My mother is 62, very stylish and has long hair. She always has it tied back in impossible looking styles, though. I think it's fine.

Flighttattendant · 21/08/2010 20:42

Wow, 62. That's impressive. Though my role model is my Granny, who is 85 and for as long as I can remember has worn hers tied up with pins.

Orla Brady - nearly 50??! Is she the one in Mistresses? I saw that by mistake the other night. Nearly a whole hour waiting for something to happen and all they did was whisper and ring each other up.

Oh and one of them did die didn't he but I missed that bit as I went to get a biscuit.

Typical.

I am 37 and have had long hair ever since at the age of 12 I had it cut really short and was mistaken for a boy. I am emotionally scarred and will never now cut my hair.
SJP is (sadly and embarrassingly) my role model (in hair - not in life generally)

Rindercella · 21/08/2010 20:44

Yes, on women. So long as it is cut regularly and looks groomed.

On men? Never over the age of 22.

VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 21/08/2010 20:45

Jane Seymour....

I'm 40 something.... with long hair and am quite offended at the idea it's too old!

I do think you need to make sure it's coloured and styled well

(Mine is mostly my own colour still tbh)

noddyholder · 21/08/2010 20:46

I am 44 and have long hair I don't suit short.I generally wear it in a loose bun with different clips and slides etc but wear it down a fair bit too and always get comments so think it is ok if in good condition and looked after.

VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 21/08/2010 20:46

Actually FA for about 10 yrs I have been saying I am enjoying the last year of long hair because soon I would be too old... Grin

Flighttattendant · 21/08/2010 20:49

Smile that was the other thing, VLKS - colour. Every woman I know colours their hair or has it done.

I don't.
Should I?

OP posts:
SacharissaCripslock · 21/08/2010 20:49

I'm 30 very soon and have waist length hair. I figure that it will only be a few years before such long hair looks silly on me so I'm making the most of it while I can! Grin

Flighttattendant · 21/08/2010 20:50

Rinders I agree totally re blokes Shock

It's bad isn't it, when they are older.

OP posts:
VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 21/08/2010 20:52

I have a friend with granite grey choppy cut - she looks fab. But generally I think coloured (well) looks good. I like a natural colour

VictoriasLittleKnownSecret · 21/08/2010 20:53

Not making much sense am I.... I like a natural looking colour

Flighttattendant · 21/08/2010 20:55

I think I worry that my face will not be right if my hair is too groomed, iyswim - all one colour and so on.

It would be like the forth bridge, I would need to sort out the rest of me as well!

Twiggy- 61.
Joanna Lumley- 63.
Jerry Hall - 54
Felicity Kendal- 64
Lulu- 60

You lot do make me laugh- you have a funny idea about age and "getting on!

Honestly, anyone in their 30 and 40s and even early 50s is not old at all! Ther are fabilour role models around of women who look great- with or without long hair- of all ages.

BoojaB · 21/08/2010 20:59

Depends on the condition, I suppose. My mother's 59 and still has long hair. It looks crap. She ties it up in a bun-like thing most of the time, which looks fine. When it's down it just looks like a hippydom hangover to me!
