two style problems, please help!

I am going to a wedding next thursday (only the evening do) at a posh hotel. I have a strapless purple dress knee length, will I look like mutton dressed as lamb? (Iam 44)think the dress looks good on but dont want to look silly.
Problem 2 my brother is having a lunch to celebrate his marriage. What does one wear to a wedding lunch? obviously above dress too dressy but have limited clothes and limited budget. Ideas please style people.

1. Does the dress fit? Do you like it? Then wear it!

BTW am 43 and would wear strapless dress but would buff up

defo not too old for strapless purple dress, what you have to do is google a gorgeous sleb that is just a bit older than you, then adopt them as your style icon,, and think Ha she's older than me - Gwyneth paltrow is mine!

Have unearthed a purple suit from next for my brothers thing with a black top under.
