Any hairdressers around? Can I bleach hair then dye with a permanent dye on the same day?

I had a bleached 'slice' in my hair last year and am having it done again soon. Last time, my hairdresser bleached it, then I put a Directions (semi permananent) dye on the bleached bit. I usually dye my hair with a permanent red colour and after 8 weeks or so, I did this as my roots were showing. It looked ok, most of my hair was a dark red (am dark brown naturally) and the bleached bit was bright red, so I just carried on doing it when it needed dying.

The bleached bit has grown out now, so am having it done again, but I was wondering if I'd be able to have it bleached, then dye my hair the same day with my usual colour? Or is this just asking for trouble? I have texted my hairdresser, but no reply as yet.

I'm assuming it's not a good idea to do this, but my roots are showing again and I need to dye my hair! I'm getting it done at the beginning of Sept - would it be ok for me to dye my hair the week before, or would it make it harder for her to do the bleached bit?

Sorry for such a long winded post! Thanks :)

Sorry I can't help as I don't really understand your post. Why would you pay to have your hair bleached and then want to put a colour on top of it?!!

Sorry, was trying to write it and referee the DC who were eating dinner!

I have very dark brown hair, but dye it different colours. At the min it's red, but last year I just had this one slice bleached, then put a semi perm dye on just the bleached bit (you know the ones in the pots? you can get red, blue, green etc).

I can't just put the Directions colour onto my natural hair as it doesn't show at all. I need my hair lightened first for it to make any difference at all. But this time, I want to keep it red all over, rather than having my natural colour with this one red slice. If I use my normal (permanent) dye, my hair goes a dark red colour, but the bleached bit goes a lovely bright red - I want to get this again but don't know if I can do it on the same day.

Am I explaining it right? I'm confusing myself I think!

Yes there's no problem with you using a permanent red dye on your bleached bit.
You might find that it goes orangey though. Stick to a blue or purple toned red otherwise it will go carroty orange.
Consider using a shampoo for redheads to minimise fading

Thanks bethjeff I appreciate your reply :) and I will be ok to do this all on the same day? I don't fancy walking around with one blonde streak in my hair!

Your hair should be fine, I bleach and colour on the same day all the time on darker hair. Bright colours look less vibrant straight onto dark hair.
I guess you have done it by now? Looking good?

MrsMeow · 16/08/2010 16:41

Thanks ShesEver :) I'm having it done on 1st Sept. It looked great last time, so hoping it will this time.

I was going to go for a blue streak but chickened out!!

If you fancy rebleaching a strand to then dye it blue then you are ok to do it within the week but I'd recommend a deep moisturising conditioner afterwards. Maybe try to do one a week to avoid getting straw hair :)

Hope it's worked out for you !

Thanks again bethjeff :) I'm not brave enough to do the blue, and wouldn't be allowed it at work I don't think (barely got away with the red!!) but will bear it in mind!
